Chapter 3 - Unspoken Secrets

For a long, heavy moment, neither of us spoke. The silence between us felt thick enough to cut with a knife. Mark stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his hands stained with grey plaster, looking like a man who had just been caught red-handed in a major crime.

"Mark," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly as I looked from his pale face to the dusty room behind him. "What is going on here? Who is that in Lily's room? And why is my daughter sleeping on a blanket in the kitchen?"

Mark let out a long, ragged breath, running a dusty hand through his hair. He looked down at his boots, then back up at me with a look of desperate, guilty panic.

"Ellie... please, keep your voice down," he pleaded, stepping into the hallway and softly closing the bedroom door behind him, leaving his guest inside. "Lily is sound asleep. If she wakes up now, everything is ruined."

"Ruined?" I repeated, stepping closer and crossing my arms tightly. "Mark, I walk into my own home at midnight after a brutal flight delay. I find my twelve-year-old child sleeping on the floor. I find you sneaking around with a stranger cutting into our walls. You have thirty seconds to explain what is happening before I lose my mind."

Mark closed his eyes, taking a stabilizing breath. "Okay. Okay. Just... come downstairs with me. Let's talk in the dining room so we don't wake Lily."

We crept down the staircase, stepping carefully around the squeaky seventh step. Down in the kitchen, Lily was still deeply asleep, her small face peaceful, wrapped up in her blanket near the threshold. Seeing her there, looking so small and innocent, softened the sharp edge of my anger, but my demand for answers remained absolute.

We sat down at the wooden dining table. Mark reached across to take my hands, but I kept them folded in my lap, waiting.

"First of all," Mark began softly, "Lily is on the floor because she was determined to surprise you. She refused to sleep upstairs because she was afraid she wouldn't hear your key in the lock. I tried to get her into our bed, but she dragged her pillow to the kitchen tile and refused to move."

"And the stranger in her room?" I asked, eyeing him sharply. "The blueprints? The drywall?"

Mark sighed, a sad, nostalgic smile touching the corners of his lips. "Do you remember three years ago, before your mother passed away?"

The mention of my mother hit me like a physical blow. A dull ache bloomed in my chest. "Of course I remember."

"Do you remember the story she used to tell Lily?" Mark continued, his eyes searching mine. "The story about the 'Secret Library of Dreams'?"

My eyes widened as memories came flooding back.
