Chapter 4 - The Hidden Blueprint

My mother had been a children's book author and a master storyteller. Before she lost her battle with cancer three years ago, she had spent countless hours sitting with Lily on the edge of her bed, weaving enchanting tales of a secret room hidden behind a bookshelf—a sanctuary where a young girl could go to write her own stories, gaze at glowing stars, and feel safe from the outside world.
It had been my mother's ultimate dream to build such a room for Lily, but her illness had taken her away before she could ever make it a reality. After her death, Lily had been heartbroken, and we had locked away most of my mother's old sketches and manuscripts in the attic, too painful to look at.
"Mark..." I whispered, the realization beginning to dawn on me. "You didn't..."
"I found your mother's old notebooks in the attic two months ago," Mark confessed, his eyes shining with tears. "Lily has been having a tough time at school lately—feeling overwhelmed, missing her grandmother. A few weeks ago, I found her sitting in her room crying over one of your mother's old drawings of that secret library."
He took a small, worn leather notebook from his back pocket and slid it across the table toward me. I recognized my mother's neat, elegant handwriting immediately. On the open page was a detailed architectural sketch of a hidden cozy nook, complete with built-in bookshelves, a velvet reading bench, starry night sky ceiling lights, and a tiny stained-glass window.
"Lily told me she wished her grandmother's magic was real," Mark said softly. "So, while you were away on your business trip this week, I hired David—he's a master carpenter and an old friend of mine. We've been working eighteen hours a day to knock out the empty void behind Lily's closet wall and turn it into an exact replica of your mother's 'Secret Library'."

I stared at the notebook, my throat tight, tears brimming in my eyes. "You... you're building her grandmother's dream room?"
"We were supposed to finish it tonight," Mark said, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "It was going to be a complete surprise for both you and Lily when you came back tomorrow morning. But the structural framing took longer than expected. When you walked in... I panicked because I thought you were going to think I'd gone completely mad."
