Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Whitmore

The following morning, the world of high society in Franklin and Nashville was rocked by a scandal of unprecedented proportions.
Rowan stood in the living room of the mountain estate, watching the news broadcast on the television screen. The live feed showed the Whitmore family mansion in Franklin surrounded by federal vehicles.
Claire Whitmore was led out of the front doors in handcuffs, a jacket thrown over her head to hide her face from the flashing cameras of the paparazzi. She looked small, defeated, and entirely stripped of her glamorous veneer. Her father, a prominent real estate mogul, followed shortly behind, also detained for questioning regarding his complicity in using family funds to cover up the illegal adoption.
Megan walked into the room, holding a sleeping Leo, while Jonah rested in a bassinet nearby. She watched the screen for a long moment, showing no signs of triumph or malice—only a profound sense of relief.
"It's finally over," she said softly.
Rowan walked over to her, taking Leo gently from her arms so she could rest. "It's just the beginning of the legal process, but yes. She will never be able to hurt you or our children again. The district attorney assured me that with the evidence we provided, there is no chance of bail. She will remain in custody until the trial."
Megan looked up at him, her eyes searching his face. The pity that had once defined her expression was gone, replaced by something complex—gratitude, relief, but also the lingering shadow of the past.
"Rowan... thank you for saving our daughter," she said quietly. "But we still need to talk about what happens next."
Rowan felt a cold pang of anxiety. He knew he didn't deserve an immediate happily ever after. He had failed her when it mattered most.
"I know," Rowan said, his voice sincere. "I don't expect you to just forget what happened a year ago, Megan. I don't expect you to walk back into my life as my wife. I built a billion-dollar company, but I was too stupid to see the value of the woman standing right beside me. I will buy you any house you want, anywhere in the world. I will provide for you and the triplets for the rest of your lives. I will be a father to them, if you let me, but I will not force myself into your space."
Megan looked at him, a small, sad smile touching her lips. "You really have changed, haven't you? The old Rowan would have demanded control. He would have insisted everything return to his version of perfect."

"The old Rowan was a blind fool," Rowan said fiercely. "The new Rowan only cares about your happiness and the safety of our children."
Megan reached out, her fingers gently brushing against his hand. "Let's take it one day at a time, Rowan. For the children's sake. And maybe... for ours."
