Chapter 4 - Web of Deceit

Within two hours, Rowan had arranged for a private, unmarked security team to transport Megan, Leo, and Jonah to a secure, luxury estate he owned in the hills of East Tennessee—a property Claire didn't even know existed. Seeing his twin sons for the first time up close had nearly brought Rowan to his knees again. They had his eyes, his hair, but they possessed Megan’s gentle demeanor.
Once they were safely settled under twenty-four-hour armed guard, Rowan drove back to his primary mansion in Franklin. It was time to face the monster in his house.
When he walked through the front doors, the house was quiet. Claire was sitting in the grand living room, a glass of white wine in hand, reviewing fabric samples for the wedding pavilion. She looked beautiful, elegant, and entirely devoid of a soul.
"Rowan!" she smiled, rising to greet him. "You missed the caterers, but I chose the lobster tails and the—"
She stopped, noticing his appearance. His suit was dusty, his tie was gone, and his eyes were completely devoid of the warmth she was used to manipulating.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her voice dropping its sweet cadence. "Did something happen at the firm?"
"No," Rowan said, walking over to the bar and pouring himself a drink, keeping his back to her so she couldn't see the hatred burning in his eyes. "Just thinking about the future. And the past."
Claire walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. Rowan had to actively suppress the urge to throw her off him. "The past is gone, honey. We're building a new life now."
"Tell me, Claire," Rowan said, turning around slowly within her embrace, looking down at her. "Do you ever think about Megan?"
Claire’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before returning, smooth as glass. "Why would I think about her? She’s an embezzler and a cheat, Rowan. We saw what she’s reduced to yesterday. A vagrant. Let’s not ruin our evening talking about trash."
"Right. Trash," Rowan murmured. "You know, I was looking through some old financial files today. Strange things happen in digital accounting. Sometimes, old deleted files leave a ghost trail. A digital footprint."
Claire’s eyes narrowed slightly, a tremor of nervousness passing through her expression. "What are you talking about?"
"Nothing for you to worry about," Rowan lied smoothly, tapping her nose playfully, though the gesture felt entirely robotic. "Just technical jargon. I have to go to the study to finish up some work. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow."
For the next three days, Rowan played the part of the doting fiancé, but behind the scenes, he unleashed the full financial and investigative power of his billion-dollar empire. He didn't use local investigators this time. He hired an elite international corporate intelligence firm, bypassing the local authorities who might be loyal to the Whitmore family name.
By Thursday night, the intelligence team delivered a comprehensive digital dossier.
Claire’s web was vast. She had used a network of shell companies to funneled money into Megan’s personal accounts, creating the illusion of embezzlement. She had paid off a corrupt technician at the security firm to splice Megan’s face onto staged hotel security footage. But the most crucial piece of evidence was a medical record from a private, elite clinic in Atlanta, Georgia.
Six months ago, Claire had suddenly claimed to have adopted a child through an private, closed international agency, presenting the baby to her high-society friends as an orphan from Eastern Europe. She called the baby girl Evelyn.
Rowan stared at the photograph attached to the Atlanta clinic's file. The baby girl had wide, bright blue eyes and a small tuft of blond hair. She looked exactly like Leo and Jonah.
She wasn't in Eastern Europe. She was being kept at the Whitmore family’s private coastal estate in Sea Island, Georgia, managed by a staff of highly paid, bound-by-NDA nannies. Claire was planning to "introduce" the child to Rowan after their wedding, presenting it as a surprise adoption she had arranged to complete their perfect family.

Rowan closed the laptop. The pieces were all on the board. Claire thought she was three weeks away from winning everything—his fortune, his status, and total control over his broken family.
He picked up his phone and called his lead security operative. "Deploy the team to Sea Island. Secure the perimeter of the Whitmore estate. Nobody goes in, nobody goes out with that child. I'm flying down tonight."
