Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

The storm rolling in over the Atlantic matched the turbulence in Rowan’s chest as his private jet touched down in Savannah, Georgia. From there, a black SUV rushed him through the torrential rain toward Sea Island.

His phone rang. It was Megan. He had kept her updated every step of the way, providing her with the peace of mind that her sons were safe and their daughter was within reach.

"Rowan?" her voice was trembling with anxiety. "Are you there? Is she safe?"

"I'm ten minutes away from the estate, Megan," Rowan said, his voice softening only for her. "My security team has had the house surrounded since sunset. The nannies and the guards Claire hired are completely outnumbered. They won't risk a fight. I am bringing our daughter home tonight."

"Please be careful," she whispered. "Claire is desperate. A desperate woman is capable of anything."

"She doesn't know I'm here," Rowan assured her. "She thinks I'm at a business dinner in Nashville. Sleep well, Megan. The next time you see me, I'll have our little girl."

When Rowan’s SUV pulled up to the gates of the massive Whitmore coastal mansion, his security chief, a former elite military operative named Vance (no relation to Marcus), stepped out of the shadows. The gates were already open, the electronic lock bypassed.

"Status?" Rowan asked, stepping into the rain.

"Clean entry, sir," the chief reported. "We isolated the house security system. The staff inside consists of two private nurses and a security guard hired by the Whitmore family. The guard stood down the moment he saw our credentials and our numbers. The child is upstairs in the nursery. Safe and sound."

Rowan didn't wait. He strode through the grand entrance of the house, his boots echoing loudly on the marble floors. He bypassed the terrified staff huddled in the kitchen under the watchful eye of his operatives and climbed the winding staircase to the second floor.

At the end of the hall, a door was painted a soft, pale pink.

Rowan pushed it open gently. The room was dark, illuminated only by a nightlight shaped like a star. In the center of the room stood a white wooden crib.

Rowan walked over, his breath catching in his throat. Sleeping soundly inside, wrapped in a pink blanket, was his daughter. She was tiny, beautiful, and completely oblivious to the war that had been waged over her existence.

He reached down, his large hands trembling as he gently lifted her into his arms. She stirred slightly, opening her eyes—the exact shade of blue as his own—before settling back against his shoulder, letting out a soft sigh.

"I’ve got you," Rowan whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek, landing on the baby’s blanket. "I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe now."

As he turned to leave the nursery, his phone vibrated violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting Megan. Instead, it was an alert from his home security system back in Franklin.

A live video feed showed a frantic Claire standing in his study, tearing drawers open, searching for the missing files he had taken from Marcus Vance. She had realized Marcus was gone, and she had realized Rowan’s behavior had changed.

On the screen, Claire stopped frantically searching. She looked directly at the hidden security camera, as if realizing she was being watched. Her face distorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. She pulled out her own phone and dialed a number.

A second later, Rowan’s phone flashed with an incoming call from Claire.

He walked down the stairs, holding his daughter securely against his chest, and answered the call.

"Where is she, Rowan?" Claire screamed through the line, her voice unrecognizable, stripped of all upper-class refinement. "Where is the baby? I went to the clinic records digitally—someone locked me out! You know, don't you?"

"I know everything, Claire," Rowan said, stepping out into the Georgia rain, where his team held an umbrella over him and his daughter as they moved toward the vehicle. "I have our daughter. She’s in my arms right now."

"You think you've won?" Claire cackled, a desperate, unhinged sound. "If I go down, I'm taking everything you love with me. You think Megan is safe? You think your precious little twins are safe? I know about the East Tennessee property, Rowan. Did you really think you could hide them from me? I have people already on their way there."

Rowan’s blood ran completely cold.
