Chapter 9 - Looking to the Future

A few weeks after the harrowing events with the federal investigation, life settled back into a comfortable, predictable rhythm. My husband transitioned to a completely new desk-based consulting role within the corporate security sector, meaning he finally got to work normal hours, come home before dark, and eat dinner with us every single night without fail.
The psychological weight of his old undercover assignment faded away, replaced by peaceful family movie nights, weekend bicycle rides to the local park, and quiet Sunday mornings making pancakes together in the kitchen.
We never spoke about the hidden forks with anyone outside of our immediate family, but the memory became a private inside joke between the three of us. Whenever my son couldn't find one of his toys, he would jokingly ask if the "secret agents" had come to take it away, leading to giggles all around.
One afternoon, while I was cleaning out his bedroom closet, I came across the little leather lanyard and federal challenge coin Agent Vance had given him. It was resting proudly on his nightstand, displayed like a medal of honor.
I picked it up, running my thumb over the embossed emblem, feeling a profound sense of gratitude. We had stared danger right in the face, navigated a terrifying situation through trust and resilience, and come out stronger on the other side.
My son walked into his bedroom, clutching a stuffed dinosaur, and saw me holding the coin.
"Mom? Are you keeping my badge safe?" he asked.
I smiled, setting it back down gently on the nightstand. "Always, sweetie. Your dad and I will always keep you safe."

He smiled happily, climbed up onto his freshly made bed—which felt completely soft and even, with zero bumps underneath—and hugged his stuffed animal tightly.
We had survived the storm, and our home was once again filled with peace, laughter, and unconditional love.
