Chapter 7 - Clearing Out the Kitchen

Later that afternoon, we decided it was time to officially restore our kitchen to its normal, peaceful state. For weeks, the silverware drawer had been a symbol of stress, deception, and hidden danger. Now, it was just an empty space waiting to be filled.
My husband had brought home a brand-new, premium set of stainless steel silverware to replace every single fork, spoon, and knife that had been handed over to federal evidence.
"All right, master organizer," my husband said, handing me the sleek velvet box containing the brand-new cutlery. "Let's stock the drawer properly this time."
I opened the smooth wooden drawer, wiping down the clean interior lining before carefully placing the shining new forks in their designated slot. Row after row of polished, ordinary, harmless forks gleamed under the kitchen lights. No hidden micro-components, no classified defense technology, no corporate espionage—just normal kitchen utensils meant for eating family dinners together.
My son stood on a little step stool beside the counter, watching the process with intense interest.
"Do these ones have secret powers?" he asked, tilting his head.
"Nope," I laughed, handing him a dull plastic spoon just so he could feel included. "These ones only have the power to eat macaroni and cheese and Sunday pancakes."
"That's a good power," he declared seriously, placing his plastic spoon neatly into the organizer tray.
My husband walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked down at the fully stocked drawer together.
"No more secrets," he whispered softly in my ear.

"No more secrets," I agreed, leaning back against him. "From now on, we handle everything together."
The kitchen felt warm, cozy, and entirely safe. The lingering shadow of the past month had finally lifted, paving the way for a fresh start for our family.
