Chapter 5 - Explaining to the Little Hero

I rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to my knees and pulling my son into a tight, protective embrace. He buried his face in my shoulder, his small frame shaking with quiet sobs.
"Shh, sweetie, it's okay," I whispered, stroking his hair soothingly. "You did such an amazing job. You were the bravest little secret agent in the whole world."
Agent Vance knelt down beside us, his rugged face softening into a warm, gentle smile. He reached into his tactical pocket and pulled out a sleek, official-looking challenge coin stamped with the Department of Justice emblem and a miniature silver badge attached to a leather lanyard.
"Agent," Agent Vance said respectfully, addressing my son directly. "I need to apologize to you. We had to collect our classified equipment back. But you successfully guarded it against the enemy just like your dad asked you to. Because of your incredible bravery, the mission was a complete success."
My son sniffled, wiping his nose with the back of his sleeve, and stared wide-eyed at the shiny badge held out in front of him. "A real mission?"
"A real top-secret mission," Agent Vance confirmed with a solemn nod. "And as a reward for your exceptional service, the United States government would like to officially appoint you as a Junior Special Operative. Do you accept the title?"
A slow, proud smile broke through my son's tear-streaked face. He nodded vigorously, taking the shiny badge and holding it tightly in both hands as if it were the most precious treasure on earth. "I accept."
"Good," Agent Vance said, standing up and tipping an imaginary hat. "Now, your commanding officer—your dad—is going to be calling you on the secure line very soon to congratulate you properly."
The agents packed up the evidence bags and quietly exited the room, leaving us in the quiet sanctuary of the bedroom. The lingering tension in the air had completely vanished, replaced by a profound sense of relief.
I tucked the blanket back around my son, brushing his curls away from his forehead. "Are you ready to go back to sleep now, my little hero?"
"Can I keep the badge under my pillow instead of the forks?" he asked softly, yawning deeply.
May you like
I smiled, my heart swelling with love. "You can keep whatever you want under your pillow, sweetheart. Your daddy will be home tomorrow, and he's never going to have to keep a secret from us ever again."
Within minutes, my son's breathing grew slow and even as he drifted back off to sleep, clutching his new federal badge in his hand.
