Chapter 4 - The Arrival of the Feds

Within seconds, the quiet suburban street was alive with flashing lights and the low rumble of idling engines. I stood paralyzed in the doorway of the kitchen, the heavy cast-iron skillet still clutched tightly in my hands, as multiple figures in tactical vests and windbreakers marked FBI converged on our front porch.
One of the agents stepped inside, keeping his hand resting reassuringly on his holstered weapon, though his expression softened when he saw me standing there alone and shaking.
"Ma'am? Are you alright? My name is Special Agent Vance," he said, holding up an identification badge for me to see. "We've been monitoring this property for the last hour. Your husband contacted our field office in Washington this evening after wrapping up his undercover operation. He told us about the package hidden inside the residence."
I let out a breath I felt like I'd been holding for an entire week, dropping the skillet onto the counter with a loud clatter. "He's safe? My husband is okay?"
"He's currently being debriefed at a secure location out of state, but yes, he is unharmed and cooperating fully," Agent Vance assured me, stepping further into the house. "I know this has been terrifying for you. But we need to secure the evidence immediately. The suspect who just fled was one of the lower-level runners for the smuggling ring. They realized the trail was going cold and came looking for the missing inventory."
I nodded numbly, gesturing toward the back hallway. "It's in my son's room. Under his mattress."
Agent Vance signaled two other agents to follow him. I walked with them down the hallway and gently pushed open the door to my son's bedroom. To my absolute amazement, despite the commotion of the front door opening and the shouting outside, my five-year-old was still fast asleep, curled up tightly in a ball, resting peacefully right on top of the pile of titanium forks.
The agents stepped softly into the room. Agent Vance carefully lifted the mattress corner, revealing the neat rows of shimmering, silver-colored utensils reflecting the pale moonlight from the window.
"That's all of them," I whispered. "Every single piece he collected."
Agent Vance carefully slid his gloved hands under the stash, lifting them out one by one and placing them into specialized evidence bags. "These aren't just forks, ma'am. These are encoded prototype micro-components disguised as flatware. Each one contains classified defense software patents embedded in the handles. Your husband saved millions of dollars in proprietary research from leaving the country."

As the last fork was lifted from the bed, my son stirred, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He blinked up at the men in tactical vests standing around his bed, then looked down at the empty space where his secret treasure used to be. His lower lip began to quiver, and tears welled up in his eyes.
"Where... where did they go?" he whimpered, looking up at me with heartbreak written all over his face. "Did the bad men take my secret?"
