Chapter 8 - The Celebration Dinner

To celebrate the closure of the investigation and the return of absolute peace to our household, we decided to cook a huge family dinner that evening. The smell of roasted chicken, garlic butter, and warm garlic bread filled every corner of our home, replacing the cold, sterile scent of anxiety that had lingered for so long.

My husband insisted on setting the dining table himself. He laid out our best tablecloth, lit a pair of scented candles in the center, and carefully placed the brand-new silverware beside each ceramic plate.

When everything was ready, we sat down together as a family. There was no phone buzzing anxiously in the background, no hurried whispers in the hallway, and no fear of someone knocking on the door in the middle of the night.

"Cheers," my husband said, raising his glass of sparkling apple cider in a toast. "To family, to honesty, and to the best little secret agent in the entire world."

"Cheers!" my son echoed enthusiastically, clinking his plastic cup against ours with a bright, infectious grin.

We dug into the meal, laughing and talking about ordinary things—what games my son wanted to play at the park tomorrow, what weekend project my husband wanted to tackle in the garage, and what movie we should watch together on television later that night. It was the most ordinary evening imaginable, but after everything we had been through, ordinary felt like the most extraordinary gift in the world.

Midway through dinner, my son looked down at his shiny new fork, then looked up at his father with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, partner?" my husband replied, smiling warmly.

"Can I keep this fork under my pillow tonight just in case?"

May you like

We both burst into laughter, the sound echoing happily through the dining room.

"Negative, agent," my husband replied, winking. "The perimeter is secure. You can sleep soundly without any forks tonight."
