Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs Open

Thursday afternoon arrived with a heavy, overcast sky. At precisely 2:00 PM, the doorbell chimed.
Ryan stood up immediately from the living room couch, smoothing his tie, wearing an expression of deep, sorrowful concern. He looked at Claire, who sat quietly in the armchair, hands folded neatly in her lap.
"Just stay calm, Claire. Let me handle the talking," Ryan instructed gently, playing the martyr to absolute perfection.
He opened the front door. Standing on the threshold was Dr. Vanessa Thorne, a court-appointed child custody evaluator holding a thick leather briefcase, accompanied by a woman Claire had never seen before—Melissa Ward, posing as an independent family advocate.
And right behind them, stepping out of the elevator with a calm, imposing stride, came Marcus Vance, followed by two uniformed process servers and a family court clerk.
Ryan’s welcoming smile instantly froze on his face.
Color drained completely from his cheeks. His jaw went slack.
"What... what is the meaning of this?" Ryan stammered, stepping back as Marcus walked past him into the apartment like he owned the place. "Who are you? How did you get in here?"
Dr. Thorne blinked in confusion, looking between Ryan and Marcus. "Mr. Bennett? I was told this was a private consultation regarding your wife's mental wellness."
"It is a consultation, Dr. Thorne," Marcus said smoothly, his voice ringing crisp and authoritative through the living room. "Except the subject of the evaluation isn't Mrs. Bennett. It’s an investigation into conspiracy, parental alienation, and perjury."
Ryan lunged forward, his face twisting in sudden, desperate panic. "This is insane! Claire, tell them! Tell them you're unstable, tell them you need help!"
Claire stood up from her chair. The fog was completely gone. Her posture was straight, her eyes clear, steady, and blazing with cold fury.

She looked straight into her husband's terrified eyes and spoke with absolute clarity.
"The only one who needs help, Ryan, is you."
