Chapter 2 - Gathering the Invisible EvidenceThe apartment was suffocatingly quiet. Claire sat at the small wooden dining table, illuminated only by the faint glow of her phone screen. In the quiet darkness of the hallway, the low tapping of Ryan’s keyboard continued. He was working late, meticulously drafting a life designed to erase her.

Claire did not cry. Her tears had dried hours ago, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp clarity.

She needed a lawyer. Not just any family law attorney, but someone ruthless enough to dismantle Ryan’s carefully constructed illusion before Thursday arrived. Her thumb hovered over her contacts list. She scrolled past local names—people Ryan might have anticipated her calling, people he might have already influenced with his narrative of her alleged instability.

Instead, she remembered Marcus Vance.

Marcus had been a senior partner at a high-profile Chicago family firm before stepping back to handle high-stakes corporate compliance and complex litigation. Claire had met him once, years ago, at an industry gala. He had a reputation for destroying premeditated custody traps with absolute clinical precision.

At 2:14 AM, Claire typed a hurried, encrypted message.

Mr. Vance. My name is Claire Bennett. My husband is staging a custody ambush backed by fabricated psychological evaluations scheduled for this Thursday. I have verifiable audio proof, cloud-backed documentation, and a ticking clock. I need representation immediately.

She hit send, unsure if he would even read it before morning.

Within four minutes, her phone buzzed on the wood.

Be at my office at 8:00 AM sharp. Bring the device and your phone. Do not let him know you know.

Claire closed her eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. The war had begun.
