Chapter 3 - The Morning Mask

Morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, casting pale geometric shapes across the floor. Claire lay completely still, feeling the rhythmic rise and fall of Ryan’s chest beside her. For nine years, this bed had felt like a sanctuary. Now, it was a trap.

Ryan stirred, rolling over and blinking against the light. His expression instantly softened into the practiced, gentle mask of the devoted, concerned spouse.

"Morning, honey," he murmured, his voice thick with sleep. He reached out, his hand resting warm and heavy on her shoulder. "How did you sleep? You were tossing and turning a bit."

It was a test. A microscopic calibration to gauge her state of mind.

Claire forced her facial muscles to relax, channeling every ounce of exhaustion she actually felt, letting the dark circles under her eyes work in her favor. She offered a fragile, hesitant smile.

"I didn't sleep well at all, Ryan," she confessed softly, letting her voice tremble with manufactured fragility. "My head is spinning. Between Lily's preschool transition and everything else... I just feel like I'm losing my grip."

Ryan’s eyes flickered with a dark, triumphant satisfaction that he masked almost instantly behind a wave of artificial empathy. He pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head.

"I know, sweetheart. I know," he whispered soothingly. "You’ve been under so much pressure. Just take it easy today. I’ll handle breakfast for Lily. You just focus on resting."

Play your part, monster, Claire thought, pressing her face into his chest so he wouldn't see the burning hatred in her eyes. "Thank you, Ryan. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"That's what I'm here for," he said smoothly.

As he got out of bed to go make pancakes, Claire stared at the ceiling. Let him feel confident. Let him believe the trap was about to snap shut. By Thursday, the jaws would reverse.
