Chapter 5 - The Web Tightens

Tuesday and Wednesday dragged by like slow motion. Claire played her role with terrifying precision. She acted distracted, occasionally dropping things, sighing heavily when Ryan looked her way, and nodding docilely whenever he suggested she needed "professional support."

Ryan was growing bolder by the hour. On Wednesday evening, while Lily was watching cartoons, Ryan sat down next to Claire on the sofa with a cup of tea.

"Claire," he began, using his most gentle, patronizing tone. "I've been talking to a specialist. Just a family consultant. She’s going to stop by tomorrow afternoon to check in on the household dynamic, see how Lily is adjusting."

Claire looked up slowly, injecting just the right amount of hesitant panic into her expression. "An evaluator? Ryan, why didn't you discuss this with me?"

"Because every time I bring up your stress levels, you get defensive, honey," he said smoothly, placing a comforting hand over hers. "This is just to help you. So you don't have to carry everything alone. Won't it be a relief to have professional guidance?"

Claire stared at his hand. She wanted to rip it away and scream the truth into his face. Instead, she swallowed hard, letting a single, perfectly timed tear slip down her cheek.

"I just... I feel like everyone is judging me," she whispered.

"No one is judging you, baby," Ryan lied, his eyes shining with sickening triumph. "We just want what's best for you and Lily."

You have no idea what's coming tomorrow, Claire thought.

She nodded slowly. "Okay, Ryan. If you think it's best."

"It's for the best," he smiled, kissing her forehead.

Later that night, while Ryan slept soundly, Claire packed a small overnight bag for Lily, tucked the pink rabbit safely inside, and confirmed every single digital file was backed up across three separate secure servers. Thursday morning could not come fast enough.
