Chapter 4 - Entering the Lion’s Den

At 7:55 AM, Claire parked her sedan three blocks away from Marcus Vance’s office building in downtown Chicago. She walked briskly through the crisp morning air, clutching her purse tight against her chest. Inside was her phone, the backup flash drive, and the pink stuffed rabbit zipped securely inside her tote bag.
Marcus’s office occupied the thirty-second floor, overlooking a sprawling gray skyline cut through by the Chicago River.
Marcus Vance did not look like a traditional attorney. In his late forties, with slate-gray hair and sharp, analytical eyes behind titanium frames, he greeted her with a firm handshake and pointed her toward a sleek leather chair.
"Sit down, Mrs. Bennett. Tell me everything, and start from the beginning."
Claire didn't waste time. She played the audio recordings from her cloud storage. She watched Marcus's face as Ryan’s voice echoed off the minimalist glass walls—coaching their four-year-old daughter to lie, coordinating with Melissa Ward, setting up a premeditated psychological ambush for Thursday.
When the audio ended, the room remained dead silent for five seconds.
Marcus leaned back, steepling his fingers. A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"Your husband is an absolute amateur," Marcus said quietly. "He thinks because he’s gaslit you for months, he holds all the cards. But he made a fatal flaw."
"What's that?" Claire leaned forward.
"He created an active paper and audio trail of malicious alienation and intentional fraud," Marcus replied, his voice dropping into professional gear. "Thursday isn't an evaluation of you, Mrs. Bennett. It’s going to be an evaluation of him. But to do that, we need to let him walk right into the trap he built for you."
"How?"

"We let his evaluator show up on Thursday. But instead of an overwhelmed, unstable mother, the evaluator is going to walk into a legal ambush orchestrated by my firm. Furthermore, we are going to subpoena his phone records regarding Melissa Ward, and file an emergency protective order for parental alienation."
Claire felt a profound weight lift from her shoulders. For the first time in months, she could breathe.
