Chapter 9 - The Choice of a Lifetime

A month later, the Russo estate looked different. The heavy, oppressive aura of fear had lifted, replaced by an atmosphere of disciplined order and quiet security.

Clara was no longer just a maid. Dominic had officially appointed her as his chief estate administrator, moving her out of the staff quarters and into a suite on the main floor, closer to his own. She managed the household with intelligence and grace, earning the silent respect of Noah and the entire staff.

Yet, the unspoken tension between her and Dominic remained. They shared dinners in the vast dining room, speaking of business, literature, and the quiet mechanics of the city, but the boundary between employer and employee hung heavily in the air.

One evening, after dinner, Dominic poured two glasses of aged scotch and handed one to Clara as they stood on the grand balcony overlooking the gardens.

The night air was warm, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine.

"You've changed this place, Clara," Dominic said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "It feels less like a fortress now. More like... a home."

Clara looked out over the sprawling lawn, her heart beating fast.

"A home built on mafia gold and iron rules," she murmured, though there was no malice in her voice.

Dominic turned to look at her, his dark eyes intense and searching.

"Every empire has a foundation, Clara. Mine was built in blood and survival. But you... you brought something else into it. Peace."

He set his glass down on the stone railing and turned to face her fully.

"I didn't plan for you, Clara. You were just a girl crying in the rain outside my gates. But letting you go was never an option. I realized a long time ago that you are the only person in this world who sees me—not the syndicate boss, not the monster the newspapers write about, just me."

Clara’s breath hitched. She looked up into his eyes, seeing all the vulnerability he hid from the rest of the world.

"Dominic..." she whispered.

He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the line of her jaw.

"Stay with me, Clara. Not as my housekeeper. Not as a protected guest. Stay with me as my partner. My equal."
