Chapter 4 - The Study of the Syndicate King

The study on the third floor of the estate was a fortress of dark mahogany wood, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with heavy leather-bound volumes, and thick Persian rugs that muffled every footstep. A massive oak desk sat beneath a grand chandelier.
Dominic sat behind the desk, reviewing a stack of physical documents.
When Clara knocked timidly on the open door and stepped inside, he did not look up immediately. He finished reading a page, slowly turned it, and then raised his dark eyes to meet hers.
"Sit," he said, gesturing to the leather armchair across from him.
Clara approached and sat down, clutching her coffee cup like a lifeline.
Dominic slid a single sheet of paper across the polished wood.
Clara looked down. It was a cancellation of debt document, stamped with a legal seal, declaring all loans taken in her name null, void, and fully absorbed. Below it was a bank routing number and an account balance statement showing a figure that made her breath catch—enough to buy a comfortable apartment and start entirely fresh.
"What is this?" she whispered, looking up in shock.
"Your life back," Dominic said plainly. "Jared Miller has relinquished all claims against you. His little operation is currently being dismantled to pay for the administrative inconvenience."
Clara’s jaw dropped.
"You... what did you do to him?"
"Nothing illegal," Dominic replied with a faint, chilling smirk. "We simply audited his business model and offered him a choice: surrender all fraudulent contracts or spend the next twenty years reflecting on his choices in a concrete box beneath the harbor."
Clara stared at the paper. A wave of profound relief washed over her, followed immediately by a tremor of fear. She was free of Jared, but she was now inextricably bound to Dominic Russo.
"Why?" she asked, her voice trembling. "You don't even know me. Why go to all this trouble?"
May you like
Dominic leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. His intense gaze locked onto hers, stripping away all her defenses.
"Because in my world, Clara, liabilities are either eliminated or owned. You belong to my house now. And I don't let anyone else ruin what belongs to me."
