Chapter 8 - The Cleansing Fire

The aftermath of the breach required decisive action. The internal leak had been traced—Viktor, the senior capo who had been skimming funds and leaking routes to rival syndicates, had orchestrated the botched break-in.
By dawn, Viktor was gone, and the remaining council members who had backed him were summoned to a late-night summit in the underground bunker.
Dominic sat at the head of a massive stone table. The air was thick with tension and cigar smoke. The old capos looked at him with a mixture of fear and newfound respect. He had not only survived the betrayal; he had anticipated it, crushed it, and consolidated absolute control over the syndicate.
"The syndicate is restructured," Dominic announced, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "From this day forward, loyalty is absolute. Anyone who tests that boundary will share Viktor's fate."
No one spoke. No one dared to challenge him. The king had secured his crown.
When Dominic returned to the upper levels of the mansion, the sun was rising, casting golden light across the polished marble floors. He walked up the grand staircase, exhausted, feeling the immense weight of the empire he carried.
He expected to find his study empty. Instead, he found Clara sitting in the armchair by the window, a cup of hot coffee waiting on the table.
She looked up as he entered, her eyes filled with a quiet, unwavering strength.
"You're bleeding," she said softly, pointing to the cut on his cheek.
Dominic touched the scratch, a small, tired smile touching his lips. It was the first real smile Clara had ever seen on his face.

"It's nothing," he said, walking over and sinking heavily into the chair opposite her.
Clara stood up, walked over with a warm, damp cloth, and gently cleaned the blood from his cheek. Dominic closed his eyes, leaning into the simple, human touch. For the first time in his life, the ruthless mafia boss felt truly at peace.
