Chapter 2 - The Logic of Shadows

The word hung in the air, dense and final.

"No," Dominic repeated.

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving. The silence in the guest room was heavy, broken only by the low hum of the climate control system keeping the bitter cold at bay.

"What do you mean, no?" she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "You can't just... trap me here. If I'm a liability, firing me is the safest option for you."

Dominic walked toward the large floor-to-ceiling window, looking out into the pitch-black grounds where the rain continued to lash against the glass. His broad shoulders blocked the faint reflection of the interior lights. He crossed his arms over his chest, his tattoos rippling slightly with the movement.

"Safety isn't about getting rid of problems, Clara. It's about controlling them," he said, turning his head just enough to show his sharp profile. "If I fire you, you walk out onto that road with no money, no home, and a trail of bad debt. Within forty-eight hours, some low-level loan shark looking for leverage will track you down. They'll find out you worked in my house. They'll try to buy you, squeeze you, or worse."

Clara swallowed hard. The logic was cold, but it was terrifyingly accurate.

"So what? You're keeping me here as a prisoner?"

"A guest," Dominic corrected smoothly, turning back to face her. "A protected asset. You work for me. That means your problems are now connected to my estate. And I do not appreciate outsiders sniffing around my perimeter."

He walked back toward the door, his movements silent and predatory. Before stepping out into the hallway, he paused and glanced over his shoulder.

"Eat your food, Clara. Sleep. Tomorrow morning, Noah will brief you on your new responsibilities. Don't think about running. The woods are full of motion sensors and men who are far less patient than I am."

The door clicked shut.

Clara sat frozen for a long time. Her mind spun wildly. She was no longer just a housekeeper; she was a chess piece in the game of a syndicate boss. Yet, as she looked around the luxurious room, a strange, grim comfort settled over her. She was safe from Jared, safe from the cold, and alive.
