Chapter 6 - The Shadow at the Gate

Two nights later, the peace of the estate was shattered.

Clara was in the guest kitchen, making chamomile tea to calm her nerves, when a sharp, jarring alarm echoed through the massive stone walls. It wasn't the fire alarm; it was the perimeter security breach klaxon.

Instantly, the entire estate transformed. Silent, armed men in tactical gear flooded the corridors, moving with disciplined precision.

The kitchen door swung open, and Dominic stepped inside.

He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore a tactical vest over a black long-sleeve shirt, a heavy automatic pistol holstered at his hip. His face was cold, carved from granite.

He spotted Clara instantly and strode across the room, grabbing her by the arm with a grip that was firm but not bruising.

"Stay down," he ordered, pulling her toward a reinforced panic room hidden behind a sliding bookcase in the library.

"What's happening?" Clara gasped, stumbling as she tried to keep up with his long strides.

"An intrusion," Dominic replied sharply, punching a code into the digital keypad beside the bookcase. The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a secure chamber equipped with communication arrays and emergency supplies. "Someone breached the west gate. They're looking for information."

He pushed her gently inside the room.

Clara grabbed the edge of his sleeve, her eyes wide with terror.

"Don't go out there. It's a trap."

Dominic looked down at her hand on his arm. For a fraction of a second, the harsh lines of his face softened. He covered her hand with his own large, calloused palm.

"I built this empire, Clara. No one takes it from me."

He pulled his arm free, stepped out, and the heavy steel door sealed shut, locking her safely inside.
