Chapter 6 - Building a New Empire

Six months passed, transforming the bitter winter chill of New York into the vibrant, blossoming warmth of early summer.

With her legal battles behind her and complete financial independence secured through the settlement and her own regained autonomy, Ava had established Sullivan-Maro Philanthropic Outreach—a foundation dedicated to supporting single mothers, newborn healthcare access, and legal advocacy for women trapped in abusive marriages. Utilizing the vast real estate portfolio she now controlled independently, she turned several former commercial properties into safe havens and resource centers.

Lily had grown into a bright, joyful baby with deep, intelligent eyes and a tuft of dark hair. She was surrounded by love, laughter, and a security detail that treated her like visiting royalty.

Nicholas Maro remained a constant, grounding presence in their lives. What had begun as a chance encounter outside a hospital in the snow had organically evolved into a deep, unshakable partnership. Nicholas visited the penthouse daily, reading bedtime stories to Lily, sharing quiet dinners with Ava, and proving that beneath his formidable, untouchable exterior lay a man of profound loyalty, kindness, and protective devotion.

One evening in late June, Nicholas invited Ava and Lily to his private estate in the Hudson Valley—a stunning historic stone manor surrounded by sprawling gardens and weeping willows.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, Ava sat on the stone terrace while Nicholas held Lily in his arms, gently bouncing her as she giggled at the evening fireflies dancing across the lawn.

Ava watched them, a profound sense of peace washing over her. The man who had abandoned them in the snow was a distant, pathetic memory—a cautionary tale of greed and arrogance. Here, beneath the starlit sky, was a man who understood the true value of family.

Nicholas walked over, handing a sleeping Lily back to Ava with practiced tenderness before sitting down in the adjacent wrought-iron chair.

"She has your spirit," Nicholas said quietly, watching Ava tuck a stray curl behind her ear.

"She has your stubbornness," Ava countered with a soft smile.

Nicholas chuckled, a rich, rare sound that reached his eyes. He reached across the table, taking Ava’s hand in his. His fingers were warm, steady, and protective.

"Ava," Nicholas began, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet solemnity that made her breath catch. "When I saw you standing outside that hospital six months ago, holding that little girl against the wind, I knew my life was about to change. I just didn't realize how completely you would redefine everything I thought mattered."

Ava looked at him, her heart pounding with a sweet, familiar warmth. "Nicholas..."

"I don't make promises I can't keep," Nicholas said, sliding a small, elegant platinum ring set with a flawless, deep-gray diamond onto her finger. "And I don't sign contracts unless I intend to honor them for the rest of my life. Marry me, Ava. Let me be a father to Lily, and a partner to you, for all the days to come."

May you like

Tears of pure happiness welled in Ava's eyes. She didn't hesitate.

"Yes," she whispered, leaning forward to press her lips to his. "Yes, Nicholas. A thousand times yes."
