Chapter 4 - The Plaza Lobby Confrontation

The afternoon sun reflected off the pristine snow outside the historic Plaza Hotel, casting a brilliant, blinding light through the grand arched windows of the lobby. The Palm Court was bustling with holiday shoppers, wealthy tourists, and high-society executives wrapped in cashmere and fox fur.

At precisely 1:55 PM, Daniel Sullivan strode through the revolving doors. He wore a brand-new custom camel-hair coat, his sandy-blond hair perfectly styled, his stride carrying the effortless swagger of a man who believed the world existed to serve his ambitions.

He spotted Ava sitting near a marble pillar.

She looked transformed. Gone was the exhausted, tear-stained woman from the hospital. Dressed in a tailored emerald-green wool coat that Nicholas’s private stylist had procured for her, her dark hair swept back in an elegant twist, Ava radiated a quiet, composed dignity that turned heads across the room.

Daniel approached her table, slipping off one leather glove to extend a hand that Ava ignored completely.

"Ava," Daniel said, his tone a patronizing mixture of annoyance and condescension. "I'm glad you finally came to your senses. Signing those papers is the smartest thing you've done since the delivery room."

Ava didn't invite him to sit down, but Daniel pulled out the opposite velvet chair anyway, signaling a passing waiter for a double espresso.

"You look well," Daniel continued, scanning her outfit with a critical eye. "I see my temporary allowance is treating you decently, though I expect receipts for these purchases."

"You didn't give me a temporary allowance, Daniel," Ava said, her voice steady and clear, cutting through the ambient hum of the lobby. "Your accounts were frozen by your own corporate auditors three days ago for financial discrepancies."

Daniel’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the off-shore accounts in the Cayman Islands," Ava said calmly, leaning forward slightly. "The ones you used to siphon capital away from Sullivan Development's primary operating ledger to fund your private real estate ventures."

The color drained instantly from Daniel's face. His espresso arrived, but he didn't touch it.

"You're bluffing," Daniel hissed, leaning across the small marble table, his voice dropping to a furious whisper. "You don't know anything about corporate finance. You were a kindergarten teacher!"

"I was," Ava agreed smoothly. "And I taught five-year-olds how to recognize when someone was trying to hide pieces of a puzzle. But you don't need to be a teacher to read a forensic audit report prepared by Maro Holdings."

The name hit Daniel like a physical blow. He physically recoiled in his chair, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated terror.

"Maro..." Daniel choked out, his voice cracking slightly. "What do you have to do with Nicholas Maro?"

"She has everything to do with me, Sullivan."

A deep, commanding voice echoed from behind Daniel.

Daniel froze. Slowly, hesitantly, he turned his head.

Nicholas Maro stood beside their table, flanked by two impassive security guards in tailored dark suits. Nicholas looked down at Daniel with the cold, detached interest of a scientist observing a particularly repulsive insect.

"Mr... Mr. Maro," Daniel stammered, scrambling to stand up, his previous arrogance entirely evaporated. "I—I didn't realize you were acquainted with—"

"With my guest?" Nicholas finished for him, sliding effortlessly into the empty chair beside Ava. "Yes, the world is remarkably small when you're busy stealing from accounts tied to my logistics network."

"I wasn't stealing," Daniel protested frantically, sweat beading along his hairline despite the chilled air of the lobby. "It was routine corporate restructuring!"

Nicholas didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. Every word carried the crushing weight of absolute power.

"Routine restructuring doesn't usually involve federal wire fraud and tax evasion, Daniel. And it certainly doesn't involve abandoning a newborn child to protect a fragile ego," Nicholas said, leaning forward. "Here are your new terms: You will sign an immediate, uncontested divorce granting Ava full, unhindered primary custody of Lily. You will transfer full ownership of the Manhattan apartment and all associated liquid assets to Ava as a retroactive child support and settlement package. And you will resign as CEO of Sullivan Development effective tonight."

Daniel stared at him in horror. "That—that ruins me! That takes everything I've built!"

"You built nothing," Nicholas corrected coldly. "You borrowed capital and abused people who trusted you. You have twenty-four hours to sign the papers my attorneys are currently delivering to your office. If you refuse, the federal indictments go out before the stock market opens tomorrow morning."

May you like

Nicholas stood up, adjusting his cuffs, and looked down at Daniel one last time.

"Choose wisely, Sullivan. A prison cell doesn't match your coat."
