Chapter 5 - The Downfall of a Fraud

Within eighteen hours, the empire Daniel Sullivan had spent a decade constructing collapsed like a house of cards.

Faced with undeniable evidence of corporate malfeasance, tax fraud, and fraudulent asset concealment compiled by Maro Holdings' legal and forensic accounting teams, Daniel’s board of directors moved with ruthless speed. By noon the following day, an emergency board meeting had voted unanimously to strip Daniel of his CEO title and oust him from the company.

The financial press had a field day. Headlines blared across New York financial blogs and morning newspapers: SULLIVAN DEVELOPMENT CEO OUSTED AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS THE FALL OF DANIEL SULLIVAN: HOW A RISING REAL ESTATE STAR CRASHED OVERNIGHT

Ava watched the news report from the comfort of the penthouse living room while Lily slept soundly in her crib nearby. Margaret Doyle poured her a cup of hot chamomile tea, smiling gently.

"It’s incredible," Margaret murmured, watching the television screen flash an unflattering photograph of Daniel looking panicked outside his former office building. "He thought he was invincible. He thought he could discard you and your daughter without a backward glance."

"Hubris," Ava said softly, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic mug. "He cared more about a legacy built on paper than a human life made of flesh and blood."

The penthouse door chimed, and Nicholas entered. He looked composed, carrying a single leather folder containing the final, signed divorce and settlement documents. He laid them on the coffee table in front of Ava.

"It's done," Nicholas said simply. "Daniel signed every page an hour ago. The apartment is legally yours, the accounts are unfrozen and transferred, and full custody of Lily is officially in your name, with zero legal recourse for him to contest it."

Ava looked at the folder, then up at Nicholas. A profound sense of weight lifted from her shoulders—a freedom she hadn't realized she was missing.

"Thank you, Nicholas," Ava said, her voice thick with emotion. "I know you didn't have to do any of this. You didn't owe me anything."

Nicholas walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling winter cityscape.

"I told you before, Ava. I have zero tolerance for broken contracts," Nicholas said quietly, turning his head to look at her. "And more importantly... I never liked men who couldn't recognize a true blessing when it was placed right in front of them."

Ava felt her heart skip a beat at the intensity in his slate-gray eyes. For the first time since that freezing night outside the maternity ward, she felt safe. Truly safe.
