Chapter 6 - Picking Up the Pieces

Three months had passed since that fateful night at The Carlyle, and Manhattan high society was still whispering about the fall of the Ingram empire. Arthur and Eleanor were currently facing federal indictments for financial fraud and tax evasion, while Vivien had retreated to a remote estate in Europe, completely shunned by the circles she once tried so desperately to impress.
As for me, my life had transformed into something I once only dared to dream about.
I sat at the mahogany dining table of Daniel’s sprawling Central Park penthouse, reviewing patient care schedules for the upcoming week at Mount Sinai Hospital, where I had recently been promoted to Head Nurse Supervisor—a position secured through my own merit and hard work, without needing anyone's charity.
Across the table, Ethan was happily building a towering fortress out of magnetic blocks, humming a cheerful tune to himself. His laughter echoed off the high ceilings, filling the sunlit apartment with a vibrant, joyful energy that it had lacked before we moved in.
The front door chimed softly, and heavy footsteps approached. Daniel walked in, loosening his silk tie, his tailored suit jacket slung over one shoulder. He looked exhausted from a long day arguing children's advocacy cases in federal court, but the moment his eyes landed on Ethan and me, his tired expression melted into a warm, radiant smile.
"Daddy!" Ethan squealed, abandoning his blocks and running across the hardwood floor.
Daniel dropped to one knee just in time to catch Ethan in a massive bear hug, lifting him high into the air as the little boy giggled uncontrollably.
"How's my favorite architectural engineer?" Daniel asked, tickling Ethan's ribs before setting him down gently.

"I built a castle, and the dragon can't get in because the walls are too high!" Ethan declared proudly, grabbing Daniel’s hand and dragging him over to inspect his creation.
I watched them from the table, a gentle smile gracing my lips as I took a sip of my coffee. The bond between Daniel and Ethan had formed naturally, built on patience, genuine care, and unconditional love. Daniel hadn't just stepped into my life as a partner; he had embraced my son as his own from the very first day.
