Chapter 3 - The Digital Paper Trail

The ballroom erupted into instant, chaotic murmurs. Wealthy socialites, corporate titans, and society columnists leaned forward, their eyes glued to the giant projection screens above the stage.

The chat logs scrolled automatically, displaying messages exchanged over the past five years.

Mother (Eleanor Ingram): Morgan is hiding out in that cramped apartment again. Make sure nobody invites her to the charity gala. We can't have our philanthropic image tainted by an unwed nurse dragging a bastard child around.

Father (Arthur Ingram): Let her struggle. It builds character. She thinks she's a hero working at St. Jude's ER. Pathetic.

Vivien Ingram: Look at what she posted today. Wearing a clearance rack dress to the park with the brat. Absolutely repulsive. I hope someone runs over her old Honda Civic.

Gasps echoed through the room. Several prominent charity board members turned their heads away from my parents in sheer disgust. Eleanor’s face flushed a violent, mottled purple as she slammed her manicured hands onto the table, shattering a crystal wine glass.

"Fabricated! Those are deepfakes! Hackers!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a shaking finger at Daniel. "He's trying to ruin our family name because of this gold-digging nurse!"

I stood up slowly, my heart pounding against my ribs, but for the first time in my life, fear was entirely absent. I looked at my mother—the woman who had starved me of affection, who had forced me to sign away my college fund to pay for Vivien’s equestrian lessons, who had laughed when my husband walked out on me.

"You spent thirty-two years trying to break me, Eleanor," I said loudly, my voice steady and clear without even needing a microphone. "You told me I was worthless. You told me nobody would ever love me. But you failed. Because unlike you, I know what real love looks like. It's holding my son when he's scared, not trading him away for status."

Vivien lunged forward, grabbing a flute of champagne and aiming to throw it directly at my face. But Daniel was faster. He caught her wrist mid-air, squeezing hard enough that she dropped the glass, which shattered harmlessly onto the stage floor.

"You're done, Vivien," Daniel whispered, loud enough to pick up on the hot mic. "The prenuptial agreement includes a gross misconduct clause. Your share of the trust fund? Frozen as of ten seconds ago."
