Chapter 8 - The Secret in the Cookie Box

A few weeks after the boardroom drama, life settled into a new, beautiful rhythm.

The dynamic between Rodrigo, Estela, and Aurora had completely transformed. No longer hiding in the shadows, Estela was officially appointed as the head of executive facilities management, overseeing operations with a dignity and grace that won her the genuine respect of the entire staff.

Aurora was given a small, cozy play nook inside Rodrigo's private suite, equipped with art supplies, books, and her very own miniature wooden desk next to his massive mahogany one.

One Saturday afternoon, Rodrigo invited Estela and Aurora to his mansion in La Moraleja for the very first time.

The massive, cold estate that had once felt like an empty museum was suddenly filled with the sound of bright, ringing child's laughter.

Aurora ran through the manicured gardens, chasing butterflies, while Rodrigo and Estela walked side-by-side along the stone path.

"It's so big," Estela said, looking up at the sprawling architectural masterpiece. "It must have been very quiet here."

"It was," Rodrigo agreed. "Too quiet. I am thinking of making some changes."

"What kind of changes?"

"Adding a playground in the backyard," Rodrigo replied with a faint smile. "And perhaps getting a giant dog."

Estela laughed—a sweet, genuine sound that made Rodrigo’s heart skip a beat.

Later that afternoon, while Estela was helping the kitchen staff prepare lunch, Aurora sat with Rodrigo in his grand library.

She pulled a small, old tin cookie box out of her little backpack and set it carefully on his lap.

"What is this?" Rodrigo asked, curious.

"My secret box," Aurora announced proudly, popping open the metal lid. "Mommy says secrets are special, but I want to share mine with you because you're my best friend."

Rodrigo looked inside the box.

It didn't contain jewels or money.

Inside were all the tiny objects Rodrigo had given her over the past few months: a polished silver paperclip, a colorful ribbon from a gift basket, a smooth blue pen, and a small, framed photograph of the three of them taken during a company event.

At the very bottom of the box was a folded piece of paper.

Rodrigo picked it up and opened it. It was a drawing Aurora had made recently.

It showed a big house with a yellow sun, a giant black dog, a woman with curly hair, a small girl, and a tall man with gray eyes holding hands.

Underneath the drawing, in Estela’s handwriting translating Aurora's words, it read:

“My Family.”

Rodrigo held the paper in his hands, feeling a deep, powerful warmth flood his entire chest. The cold vault he had built around his heart for forty-two years didn't just crack—it completely dissolved.

Aurora looked up at him, her eyes bright and hopeful. "Do you like it, Mr. Cold-Eyes?"

May you like

Rodrigo pulled the little girl into a gentle, warm hug, resting his chin against her brown curls.

"I love it, little one," Rodrigo whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "It's the best secret I've ever known."
