Chapter 5 - Storm Clouds and Shadowed Past

Life, however, rarely moves forward without resistance.

As autumn arrived in Madrid, bringing heavy rain and bitter winds, a shadow from the past began creeping toward Fontes Holdings.

Rodrigo’s younger half-brother, Xavier Fontes, had returned from self-imposed exile in Switzerland. Xavier was everything Rodrigo was not: charming on the surface, irresponsible underneath, and driven by a desperate, toxic jealousy of Rodrigo's absolute control over the family fortune.

Xavier held a fifteen percent share in Fontes Holdings, and he had spent years trying to find a weakness in Rodrigo’s armor to force a board vote and push his brother out of the CEO position.

One rainy afternoon, Xavier made an unannounced appearance at the corporate headquarters.

He strutted through the executive floor, making loud, condescending remarks to the staff, until he reached Rodrigo's corner office. Without knocking, he pushed the door open.

"Rodrigo, my dear brother!" Xavier sneered, stepping inside and flinging his wet designer coat onto a chair. "Still hiding in your glass castle, counting your pennies?"

Rodrigo didn't look up from his computer screen. "You need an appointment to see me, Xavier. And you are violating corporate protocol."

"Oh, spare me the lecture," Xavier scoffed, walking over to the bar to pour himself a glass of expensive scotch. "I'm here because the board is getting restless. The European expansion plan is taking too long. Some of us think you're losing your edge."

As Xavier turned around with his drink, his eyes landed on the corner of Rodrigo’s pristine mahogany desk.

There sat a small plastic tea cup, a box of crayons, and a half-finished drawing of a sunshine.

Xavier let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "What on earth is this? Don't tell me the great Rodrigo Fontes has finally lost his mind? Are you playing with toys now?"

Rodrigo’s posture instantly stiffened. His eyes flashed with a cold, lethal fury that would have silenced any normal man.

"Put down the glass and leave my office, Xavier," Rodrigo said, his voice dropping an octave, sounding like dangerous, grinding tectonic plates.

"Or what?" Xavier taunted, stepping closer to the desk. "You'll throw a crayon at me? You're weak, Rodrigo. Everyone thinks you're an unfeeling machine, but look at this nonsense. You're soft."

At that exact moment, the office door swung open wider.

Little Aurora walked in, holding a small dustpan, having just helped her mother clean the nearby conference room. She stopped cold, sensing the thick, terrifying tension in the room.

Xavier looked down at the child, then looked at Rodrigo, a malicious smile spreading across his face as he put the pieces together.

"Well, well, well," Xavier purred slyly. "Who is this little rat? Don't tell me... a janitor's child roaming the executive floor? Is this how you run a professional firm now, Rodrigo?"

Xavier reached out toward Aurora, intending to roughly pull her out of the room by her arm to make a scene in front of the staff. "Get out of here, kid—"

Before Xavier’s hand could touch Aurora, Rodrigo was across the room.

With lightning speed, Rodrigo grabbed Xavier by the wrist, squeezing with enough force to make the younger man gasp in sudden pain.

"Touch her," Rodrigo whispered directly into Xavier’s ear, his voice terrifyingly calm, "and I will personally ensure you leave this building with nothing left in your bank accounts except debt. Try me."

Xavier’s face went white. He pulled his hand back, wincing, stepping away from the child.

Aurora, frightened by the loud confrontation, ran behind Rodrigo, wrapping her small arms tightly around his leg.

Rodrigo stood tall, shielding the little girl completely from his brother's sight.

"Get out," Rodrigo commanded softly.

Xavier straightened his suit coat, his eyes burning with embarrassment and hatred. "You're going to regret this, Rodrigo. I'm calling an emergency board meeting for next week. Let's see what the shareholders think of your little domestic charity project."

Xavier stormed out of the office, slamming the door behind him.

The room fell into an uncomfortable, heavy silence.

Rodrigo slowly turned around and knelt down in front of Aurora. His heart was pounding—not from fear of his brother, but from a fierce, instinctual urge to protect the little girl that he hadn't known he possessed.

"Are you alright?" Rodrigo asked softly, checking her hands and face.

Aurora looked up at him, her brown eyes filled with tears, but she nodded. She reached out and patted Rodrigo's cheek with her warm little hand.

"He was a mean man," Aurora whispered. "Like the monster under the bed."

May you like

"He won't hurt you," Rodrigo promised firmly, looking deep into her eyes. "I will never let anyone hurt you or your mother. Do you understand me?"

Aurora wiped a tear from her cheek and smiled softly. "I know. Because you're my giant gray bear."
