Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Betrayal

Xavier Fontes was a man driven by spite, and spite is a powerful motivator.
Over the next five days, Xavier worked endlessly behind the scenes. He gathered a faction of disgruntled board members, feeding them exaggerated stories about Rodrigo’s erratic behavior, accused him of neglecting corporate responsibilities, and claimed that Rodrigo was misusing company funds for personal reasons.
The rumor mill within Fontes Holdings reached a fever pitch.
Estela began to notice the hostile glares from corporate security and executive assistants. She knew something was horribly wrong. She felt guilty, believing that her presence and Aurora’s presence had put Rodrigo—the man who had secretly transformed their lives with a miraculous promotion and a safe, new apartment—in grave danger.
On Tuesday morning, the day of the extraordinary board meeting, Estela walked into Rodrigo’s office before the sun rose.
She placed a clean envelope on his desk. Inside was her resignation letter.
When Rodrigo arrived at 7:00 AM, he found the letter. He immediately summoned Estela to his office.
"What is the meaning of this, Mrs. Vasconcellos?" Rodrigo asked, holding up the letter, his face etched with genuine distress.
Estela kept her eyes on the floor, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "Mr. Fontes... you have been more generous to us than anyone in our lives. You gave us hope when we had nothing. But I hear the stories in the hallways. Your brother... the board... they are using us to destroy you. I cannot let my daughter be the reason you lose everything you built."
Rodrigo walked around his desk and stood before her.
"Look at me, Estela," he said softly.
It was the first time he had ever used her first name. Estela looked up, surprised by the softness in his voice.
"You and Aurora are not destroying my life," Rodrigo said, his eyes filled with an intensity she had never seen before. "For fifteen years, this building was my entire world, and it was completely hollow. You did not break my routine; you saved me from it. You will not resign."
"But the board meeting today—"
"Leave the board meeting to me," Rodrigo said firmly. "I want you and Aurora to stay in my private office during the vote. Whatever happens, you are under my protection."
At 10:00 AM, the grand boardroom on the top floor was filled with twenty of the most powerful investors in Europe.
Xavier sat at the end of the long mahogany table, wearing a triumphant smile.
Rodrigo walked in, taking his place at the head of the table. He looked around at the faces of the men and women he had made rich over the last decade.
"Let us begin," Rodrigo declared calmly.
Xavier immediately stood up, launching into an impassioned, aggressive speech.
"Members of the board," Xavier announced, holding up a thick folder of papers. "We are here today to address a crisis of leadership! Rodrigo Fontes has lost his focus. He has allowed personal emotional distractions to compromise the security and prestige of this firm. He is transferring company assets, granting unauthorized high-level payroll positions to unskilled labor, and bringing unauthorized civilians into high-security corporate areas!"
Xavier slammed the folder onto the table. "He is no longer fit to lead Fontes Holdings! I move for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove him as CEO!"
A low murmur echoed through the boardroom. Several board members looked uncomfortable, while others nodded in agreement with Xavier.
Rodrigo sat quietly, listening to every word without interrupting.
When Xavier finally finished his dramatic presentation and sat down, expecting Rodrigo to panic or offer a desperate defense, the room fell silent.
Rodrigo slowly stood up. He did not look angry. He looked entirely in command.
"Is that all, Xavier?" Rodrigo asked smoothly.
Xavier sneered. "It's enough to vote you out, brother."
Rodrigo reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a sleek silver USB drive. He placed it on the table and slid it over to the head of the board’s audit committee.
"On that drive," Rodrigo said, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the silent room, "you will find the complete financial records of Xavier Fontes's shell corporations based in Grand Cayman over the last four years."
Xavier’s smug smile instantly froze.
"While my brother was busy monitoring who sweeps the floors on the 40th floor," Rodrigo continued coolly, "he was also embezzling twelve million euros from our European logistics subsidiary."
The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Board members leaned over to look at the documents loading up on the main digital displays across the room. The evidence was irrefutable, meticulously detailed, and completely devastating.
"This is a lie! This is a setup!" Xavier screamed, his face flushing dark red as he scrambled to his feet.
"The police are waiting downstairs in the lobby, Xavier," Rodrigo said, his gray eyes cold and unyielding. "Your shares in this company have been legally frozen under corporate anti-fraud statutes. You are finished."
Two security officers entered the boardroom and escorted a shouting, desperate Xavier out of the room.
Rodrigo straightened his cuffs and looked around the table at the remaining board members, who were sitting in stunned silence.

"Now," Rodrigo said quietly. "Does anyone else wish to question my management of this company?"
Not a single person spoke.
