Chapter 7 - Tides Turning at the Docks

The battle at the Bainbridge estate was swift and brutal. Dominic Vance had underestimated the sheer firepower and discipline of Adrian Vale’s private security detail. Within twenty minutes, Vance’s assault team was completely neutralized, and Vance himself was captured attempting to flee through the woods.

When the smoke cleared, the estate was secure. Federal marshals arrived shortly after to take Vance and his remaining men into custody, effectively dismantling the last remnants of Raines’s criminal syndicate.

Two days later, the harbor of Seattle was quiet under a blanket of afternoon sun.

Nia stood on the balcony of Harbor Point Community Clinic, wearing her freshly pressed medical scrubs. The clinic had officially reopened that morning. Patients had flooded through the doors—construction workers, mothers with young children, elderly retirees—all coming to see their favorite nurse.

Gerald Torres had come in personally, bringing a bouquet of fresh daisies to thank her for noticing his file and saving his life.

Yet, despite the joy of being back at work, Nia’s mind kept drifting to the Bainbridge estate.

Since the attack, Adrian had not contacted her. Marcus had safely escorted her back to her apartment, provided her with new security measures, and handed her an envelope containing a clean bill of health and an unlimited financial grant for the clinic's medical equipment.

It was a generous goodbye. A clean break.

At 5:00 p.m., as Nia finished her shift and stepped out onto the clinic’s front steps, she stopped in her tracks.

Parked across the street was a single black SUV.

Leaning against the passenger door, holding a simple paper cup of warm tea, was Adrian. He wore a simple dark blue suit, without his usual entourage of armed guards.

Nia walked across the pavement toward him, her heart beating a fast, hopeful rhythm against her ribs.

"I thought you said being near you was too dangerous," she said, stopping a few feet away, a gentle smile touching her lips.

Adrian set the tea down on the hood of the car and looked at her. The cold, distant look of the underworld kingpin was entirely gone, replaced by the eyes of the man who had held her hand in the dark.

"I tried to convince myself that staying away was the right thing to do," Adrian said softly, his voice full of emotion. "I spent eleven years building a fortress so no one could hurt me again. But over the last week, I realized something."

"What did you realize?"

"That a fortress is just a prison if you're inside it alone," Adrian said. He took a step closer, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the silver bracelet. "I brought this back to you. But this time, I don't want to leave."

Nia looked at the worn silver charm, then up into his eyes. "You don't have to leave, Adrian. You spent eleven years keeping a promise to a stranger. It's time you let that stranger get to know the man behind the promise."

Adrian smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his sharp face—and gently clasped the silver bracelet back around her wrist.
