Chapter 6 - An Empire Under Siege

The arrest of Victor Raines sent shockwaves through Seattle’s business and political elite. Within forty-eight hours, federal grand juries issued dozens of indictments targeting Raines’s network, freezing over two hundred million dollars in assets, and shutting down his illicit distribution pipelines.
However, a cornered beast is always the most dangerous.
While Raines was held without bail in a federal detention center, his second-in-command, a ruthless mercenary named Dominic Vance, went into hiding. Vance knew that with Raines behind bars, Vale Logistics would take full control of the Seattle waterfront. Desperate for revenge and leverage, Vance gathered the remaining loyalists of Raines's syndicate.
At the Bainbridge estate, Nia was walking through the lush private gardens, enjoying the crisp ocean air. Her health had improved dramatically over the week; she no longer needed painkillers, and her strength was returning.
Adrian walked beside her, keeping a steady, protective pace.
"The clinic is opening again on Monday," Adrian said, watching her profile. "The federal board cleared Harbor Point of any wrongdoing. They recognized that the leadership was compromised by Raines, and they've appointed an interim director. The staff is eager to have you back."
Nia smiled, a genuine sparkle returning to her eyes. "Thank you, Adrian. For keeping your promise. For keeping them safe."
"You don't need to thank me, Nia. It was the least I could do." He paused, looking down at his polished shoes. "Once the trial begins, you'll be placed under federal witness protection until you testify. After that... you can return to your life. Safe and unbothered."
A strange pang of sadness tightened in Nia’s chest. Return to her life. Before the rain, before Adrian, her life had been quiet, routine, and lonely. She had spent five years caring for everyone else, with no one to care for her.
"Is that what you want?" Nia asked softly, stopping on the gravel pathway to look at him. "For me to just... go back to how things were?"
Adrian stopped, turning to face her. His dark eyes were filled with unspoken emotions. "I am a man of shadows, Nia. You belong in the light. You heal people. I... manage destruction. Being near me will always carry risk."
Before Nia could respond, Marcus’s voice crackled urgently through Adrian’s earpiece.
"Boss! We have a breach at the perimeter gate! Three armored vehicles just rammed the north fence! It’s Vance!"
Gunfire erupted in the distance, shattering the tranquility of the garden.
Adrian acted instantly. He grabbed Nia by the waist, pulling her behind a reinforced stone pillar just as bullets chipped away at the marble statues nearby.
"Marcus, fall back to the main house! Secure the safe room!" Adrian barked into his comms, drawing a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his jacket.
"Adrian!" Nia cried, holding onto his arm.
"Listen to me," Adrian said, his voice absolute and commanding, yet tender. "Go with Marcus into the subterranean vault. It's reinforced steel. Nothing can get through it."
"I'm not leaving you!"
"Nia, eleven years ago, you saved me because you didn't give up," Adrian said, cupping her face in his hands, his eyes locked onto hers amidst the sound of roaring engines and gunfire. "Now let me fight for you. Go!"

Marcus appeared through the garden smoke, firing suppressive shots behind him. "Miss Whitaker, with me now!"
Nia was pulled away toward the main house, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched Adrian turn back into the smoke, a lone shadow standing tall against an oncoming storm.
