Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Records

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the Bainbridge estate, casting long, peaceful ribbons of light across the hardwood floor. To Nia, the stillness felt surreal. Just thirty-six hours ago, she was kneeling in a puddle of freezing rain, preparing to die. Now, she was surrounded by silk sheets, monitored by Dr. Chen’s soft-spoken attentiveness, and guarded by three heavily armed men standing silently outside her room.

At noon, the heavy oak door swung open. Adrian walked in, accompanied by Marcus Grant, who carried a sleek black leather briefcase.

Adrian pull a chair up to the bedside, his dark eyes studying Nia’s pale face. "Dr. Chen says your vitals are stabilizing. How are you feeling?"

"Like I was hit by a truck," Nia said, offering a weak smile. "But better than yesterday. Did... did Marcus find it?"

Marcus stepped forward, clicked open the briefcase, and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive wrapped in a velvet pouch. "Taped behind the kitchen kickplate, exactly where you said. We arrived just in time. Two of Raines’s cleanup crew were ransacking your bedroom when we walked in."

Nia’s breath caught in her throat. "What happened to them?"

Marcus looked toward Adrian, whose expression remained entirely unreadable. "They’ve been detained for questioning," Adrian answered smoothly, cutting off further detail. "More importantly, Marcus’s tech team managed to decrypt your files last night. Nurse Whitaker... what you uncovered goes far beyond simple billing fraud."

Adrian gestured to Marcus, who laid several printed spreadsheets over the foot of the bed.

"You found Gerald Torres’s fake echocardiogram," Adrian explained, pointing to a highlighted line of numbers. "But that was just the thread that unraveled the tapestry. Victor Raines isn't just laundering offshore money through Harbor Point Community Clinic. He’s using the clinic's logistical network—the medical delivery vans, the blood bank transports, the pharmaceutical supply trucks—to move illicit fentanyl and unregistered bio-medical equipment throughout the entire Pacific Northwest."

Nia felt the blood drain from her face. "The community clinic... they treat children, elderly retirees, low-income families. Raines is using a neighborhood sanctuary to smuggle poison?"

"He selected Harbor Point specifically because no one inspects medical supply vehicles entering residential zones," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with dangerous calm. "He calculated that public health workers would be too overworked, too exhausted to notice the discrepancies in cargo weight or patient files."

"He didn't count on you," Marcus added quietly.

Nia looked at the papers, her mind racing through the names of her colleagues, her patients. "If Raines realizes the drive is gone, he’ll burn everything down to cover his tracks. He'll erase the digital servers at Harbor Point. He might hurt the staff."

"He won't get the chance," Adrian said, standing up and buttoning his coat. "Raines thinks you’re dead in a gutter somewhere. He believes his men are currently searching for the drive. As long as he feels secure, he will proceed with his scheduled shipments. We are going to let him step right into his own trap."

Adrian paused, turning back to look at Nia. He reached out and gently laid his hand over hers. His palm was warm, solid, and reassuring against her bruised skin.

"I need you to stay here and rest, Nia," he said softly. "My men are monitoring every corner of Harbor Point. No harm will come to your colleagues. You gave me my life eleven years ago. Let me protect yours now."

Nia looked down at their joined hands, feeling a strange sense of calm wash over her despite the storm gathering outside. "Promise me you won't kill him, Adrian. Let the federal authorities take him down. If you resort to his level, then what did I save eleven years ago?"

Adrian stared at her for a long moment, the ruthless mobster clashing with the vulnerable boy who had once hidden in a hospital supply closet.

"I will give him to the law," Adrian promised quietly. "But I will make sure he never sees the light of day again."
