Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Two years after the trial, Elena’s life had settled into a peaceful, highly productive rhythm. Leo was now a bright, energetic toddler with curly dark hair and a joyful laugh that filled her home with constant light.

One rainy afternoon, while Leo was playing with his building blocks in the living room under Marcus’s watchful eye, Elena received a certified letter from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

She sat at her kitchen counter and opened the envelope with a letter opener. Inside was an official notice stating that inmate Preston Pierce had requested a meeting through his legal counsel, citing critical information regarding offshore family trust accounts that belonged to Leo.

Attached was a handwritten note from Preston:

Elena, I know you hate me. I know I deserve where I am. But I am dying of liver failure, and I have months left. Please bring Leo to see me once before I go. He deserves to know his father, and I have assets to sign over to him directly.

Elena stared at the letter for a long moment. Her hand didn't shake. Her heart didn't race. The power he once held over her was completely gone.

Marcus walked into the kitchen, carrying Leo on his hip. He noticed the letter in her hand and the prison seal on the envelope.

"Is it him?" Marcus asked quietly.

"He wants to see Leo," Elena said, handing the letter to her brother. "He says he's dying and wants to leave him his trust funds."

Marcus skimmed the letter, his brow furrowing with anger. "You don't owe him a single second, El. Not a word, not a look, and certainly not your son."

Elena stood up, taking Leo into her arms and holding him close. She kissed her son’s forehead, listening to his soft laughter.

"I know," Elena said softly. She took the letter, walked over to the fireplace, and dropped it into the roaring flames. She watched the paper shrivel and burn into black ash.

"Preston gave Leo life, but he was never a father," Elena said, her voice filled with quiet certainty. "Leo has a family who loves him, protects him, and teaches him what true strength looks like. He will never need anything from that man."
