Chapter 3 - The Federal Web

Three days after the incident in the ICU, Elena was transferred to a secure, private wing of the hospital under 24-hour armed guard. Her son, whom she officially named Leo Vance, was thriving in the neonatal unit, recovering quickly from the distress of his prolonged labor.
In Elena’s room, Special Agent Sarah Miller of the FBI’s Medical Fraud Division sat beside the bed, a thick leather binder open on her lap.
"Dr. Vance, the depth of what your husband—or ex-husband—was running is far beyond standard medical negligence," Agent Miller explained, turning a page filled with financial statements and altered patient files. "Preston was the lead investigator for a high-stakes clinical trial funded by Vance-Pierce BioTech, a private entity he set up using your forged signature."
Elena leaned back against her pillows, cradling little Leo in her arms. "The high-risk pregnancy files... he wasn't just altering them to cover up mistakes. He was selecting specific patients."
"Exactly," Miller confirmed. "He was intentionally forcing high-risk natural deliveries on women with pre-existing vascular or uterine scar tissue to test a synthetic clotting agent under extreme trauma. If the drug worked, he stood to make hundreds of millions in military defense contracts. If the patient bled out..."
"He blamed it on medical complications and altered the pre-op records to make it look like the patient concealed their medical history," Elena finished, her voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "That’s why my file was sealed. He knew about my previous abdominal injury from our car accident five years ago. He was using his own wife as a test subject."
Agent Miller nodded solemnly. "When Khloe staged that incident in the delivery room, she gave Preston the perfect excuse to deny you a C-section without raising immediate suspicion among the nursing staff. But he miscalculated your resilience—and he didn't count on you recording his authorization codes."
"Where is he now?" Elena asked.
"Held without bail at the federal detention center," Miller replied. "His legal team is trying to claim he was under extreme stress, but the paper trail you provided is ironclad. However, we have a problem. The chairman of Vance-Pierce BioTech, Lord Arthur Sterling, is attempting to buy out the hospital board and suppress the physical evidence before the grand jury convenes next week."

Elena looked down at Leo’s small, quiet face. The weakness in her limbs began to melt away, replaced by an unyielding resolve.
"Arthur Sterling was my father's former business partner," Elena said softly. "He thinks he controls this hospital because he funds the wing. He's about to learn that he only funded his own downfall."
