Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Blackout

The low, mechanical hum of the backup generators failed to kick in immediately, plunging the Intensive Care Unit into a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Red emergency strip lights along the floor flickered to life, casting eerie, blood-colored shadows across the polished tile floor. Alarms began to blare in irregular, discordant rhythms—monitors chirping violently as their battery reserves took over.
Inside the quiet room, Elena’s breath hitched. Though her body was battered, her instincts as a mother and a surgeon overrode the lingering effects of the anesthesia. Her vision was blurry, but she saw the silhouette standing over her son’s bassinet. A gloved hand had wrapped tightly around the baby’s plastic identification bracelet.
"Touch him, and you die in this room," Elena rasped, her voice raw from the breathing tube that had only recently been removed.
The figure didn't flinch. Instead, a pair of sharp, familiar eyes reflected the red emergency light. It wasn't Preston. It was Khloe.
Khloe was dressed in a dark hoodie over her medical scrubs, a small syringe concealed in her left palm. "You were supposed to die on that table, Elena," Khloe whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and desperation. "Preston was supposed to lose his license, lose his mind, and turn to me. You ruined everything with that encrypted file!"
"He never loved you, Khloe," Elena said slowly, calculating the distance between her bed and the bassinet. Her body throbbed with excruciating pain from the torn abdominal tissue and surgical incisions, but adrenaline coursed through her veins. "You were just a tool to him. An easily manipulated intern."
"Shut up!" Khloe hissed, raising the syringe toward the infant’s IV line. "If I can't have the life I planned, you don't get to keep your prize!"
Before Khloe could plunge the needle, the door swung open with a heavy thud. Elena’s brother, Marcus Vance, charged into the room alongside two hospital security officers.
"Step away from the bassinet!" Marcus roared.
Khloe panicked. She lunged forward, but Elena, summoning every ounce of strength left in her shattered body, reached out from the bed and grabbed Khloe’s wrist, twisting it inward with surgical precision. The syringe dropped to the floor, shattering against the tile. Security guards tackled Khloe to the ground, slamming her wrists into metal handcuffs as she screamed obscenities.
Marcus rushed to the bassinet, picking up the baby boy and cradling him tightly before leaning over Elena. "He's safe, El. He's safe. I've got him."
Elena let out a ragged sigh, her body sinking back into the mattress as tears carved clean lines through the dried blood on her cheeks. "The encrypted file, Marcus... did you send it to the federal prosecutor?"
Marcus nodded grimly, adjusting the infant's blanket. "It’s done. The FBI isn't just investigating Preston for malpractice anymore. They're looking at illegal pharmaceutical testing and falsifying maternal death records across three state hospital networks."

As the main power grid clicked back on, floodlights illuminating the ICU, the doors swung open once more. Preston Pierce stood in the hallway, flanked by federal agents in suits. His lab coat was gone, replaced by a rumpled dress shirt, his hair disheveled, and his hands pinned behind his back in heavy steel cuffs.
He caught Elena’s gaze through the glass wall. His face was pale, his arrogant demeanor utterly destroyed. He tried to speak, but the federal agents pushed him forward, marching him down the corridor into the cold light of justice.
