Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Three weeks passed.
The battle at the Lake Forest estate marked the end of the Moretti syndicate. With Marco dead and his top lieutenants eliminated, Kirill and the remaining Volkov forces systematically dismantled what was left of their rival's empire across Chicago.
We relocated to a secluded, heavily guarded villa on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was a serene location, surrounded by deep forests and quiet waters—a stark contrast to the violence we had barely escaped.
Damon’s recovery was slow, but his sheer willpower pulled him through. The shrapnel wounds healed, leaving new scars on his chest alongside the old ones. But mentally, he was a changed man.
One afternoon, I sat on the sunlit back patio overlooking the calm lake, reading a book. Footsteps sounded behind me, soft and deliberate. I turned to see Damon walking toward me, wearing a simple white shirt and dark trousers. He looked rested, his color restored, his gray eyes clear and steady.
"You shouldn't be walking without your cane yet," I teased gently, setting my book aside.
"The doctor said I'm fully recovered," Damon replied, taking a seat beside me. He took my hands in his, pulling them to his lips to kiss my knuckles softly. "And I got tired of sitting in that room without you."
"Is it finally over?" I asked quietly, looking into his eyes. "The war?"
Damon nodded. "The Morettis are gone. The city is quiet. The other families have recognized my authority, and Kirill is handling the restructuring of our operations." He paused, his expression turning serious. "Which means I can finally give you what I promised."
"What's that?"
"A choice," Damon said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a blue leather passport and a set of keys. "This is a clean identity, a villa in Italy, and enough wealth to live comfortably for the rest of your life. No danger, no guns, no mafia. You can leave today."
I looked at the passport on the table, then looked back at Damon.
"Is this what you want?" I asked.
"I want you to be safe, Alina," he confessed, his voice tight with suppressed emotion. "I love you too much to force you into this life of shadows."
"You still don't get it, do you?" I smiled, sliding the passport back across the table toward him. "My life was empty and quiet before I met you. I was hiding from the world. I don't want a quiet life in Italy without you. I want to be where you are."

Damon breathed a deep sigh of relief, a raw, emotional smile breaking across his handsome face. He pulled me into his lap, burying his face into the crook of my neck as he held me tightly against his chest.
"I will protect you with my life," he swore, his voice trembling. "Always."
