Chapter 4 - The Shadow War

Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere inside the Lake Forest estate transformed from quiet luxury into a fortified warzone. High steel gates were reinforced, armed guards patrolled the grounds around the clock, and the servants were strictly confined to their quarters after sunset.

Despite the danger, my relationship with Damon shifted dramatically. I was no longer treated as a maid. While Mrs. Petrova feigned ignorance and Sloan offered silent support, Damon insisted I spend my evenings in his private study, protected under his direct supervision.

"The Moretti syndicate is led by Marco Moretti," Damon explained one late night, spreading a map of Chicago across his heavy oak desk. "He's aggressive, reckless, and desperate. His family is losing control of the docks, and he believes killing me will shatter the Volkov alliance."

"And the mole?" I asked, sipping tea across from him. "Did you find out who betrayed your location the night of the ambush?"

Damon’s jaw tightened. "It was Dr. Vance, as I suspected. Marco paid off his gambling debts in exchange for my physical status and movement."

"What did you do to him?"

"He's no longer in Chicago," Damon replied calmly, though the icy edge in his tone gave away the grim truth. He looked across the table at me, his gaze softening. "I shouldn't be speaking of such things in front of you. You deserve a peaceful life, Alina. Far away from blood and vengeance."

"I chose to stay," I reminded him softly. "You gave me a choice, and I chose this."

"Why?" he asked, rising from his seat and walking around the desk to stand beside my chair. "Why stay in a cage with a monster?"

I stood up to face him, looking directly into his stormy gray eyes. "Because the monster keeps me safe. Because... I think I'm falling in love with you, Damon."

A stunned silence filled the room. Damon looked down at me, his breathing hitched. For months, he had kept his feelings suppressed behind walls of stoicism and duty. Slowly, gently, he raised his hands, cupping my face in his large, warm palms.

"I have loved you since the day you walked into this house," he whispered against my lips. "I tried to ignore it. I tried to push you away to keep you safe. But I can't hide it anymore."

When his lips met mine, it was a gentle, reverent kiss—a quiet promise spoken in the middle of a gathering storm. For a moment, the danger outside faded away, replaced by the warmth of his embrace.

Suddenly, the silent alarm on his desk flashed bright red.

The heavy wooden doors of the study burst open, and Kirill rushed in, a submachine gun slung over his shoulder.

"Damon! They're through the outer gate," Kirill yelled. "Marco Moretti is here."
