Chapter 2 - The Unspoken Confession

The room smelled heavily of iron, expensive cologne, and antiseptic. I stood frozen near the threshold, my gaze fixated on the weathered photograph resting inches away from a loaded matte-black pistol. It wasn't a formal headshot. It was a candidate shot taken from afar—me walking across the courtyard six months ago, autumn leaves swirling around my coat.

"Alina," Damon repeated, his voice raspy, laced with pain. "Step away from it."

My legs felt like lead, but my instincts forced me to move toward him instead of retreating. I knelt beside his slumped frame, setting the heavy steel medical kit onto the hardwood floor. His body radiated intense heat. Sweat glistened on his broad shoulders, and a deep laceration ran across his ribs, bleeding through makeshift gauze.

"Why do you have my picture, Mr. Volkov?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to appear composed.

Damon leaned his head back against the mahogany bedpost, closing his eyes briefly as a spasm of pain contorted his features. "It wasn't meant for you to see. Not like this."

"Are you keeping tabs on me? Am I in danger?"

He opened his steel-gray eyes, burning with an intensity that pinned me to the spot. "You were in danger the moment you stepped footprint onto this estate two years ago, Alina. That picture was taken by a rival family—the Moretti syndicate. They were tracking my household, looking for leverage. I took that photo off a dead scout's body three months ago."

A chill ran down my spine. "Leverage? I'm just a maid."

"You are not just a maid to me," he growled softly, wincing as he shifted his weight. "And unfortunately for both of us, they noticed."

I pressed a clean sterile pad against his bleeding side. He hissed through his teeth, his hand shooting up to grip my forearm once again—just as he had in the study two days ago. But this time, his grip wasn't just protective; it was desperate.

"The doctor... why did you send him away?" I whispered, maintaining pressure on his wound.

"He’s compromised," Damon said flatly. "Kirill doesn't know yet, but the ambush tonight was tipped off internally. I couldn't trust him near me with a blade while I was incapacitated."

"And you trust me?"

Damon looked up, his gaze holding mine hostage. "I trust you with my life, Alina. More than I trust myself."

The raw honesty in his confession hung heavy in the silence between us. I wiped the blood from his skin using rubbing alcohol, stitching the clean edges of his wound with steady hands. I had learned basic field medicine from my late father, a combat paramedic, but stitching up Chicago's most powerful crime boss was a reality I had never envisioned.

Throughout the painful process, Damon didn't make a sound. He simply watched me—every micro-expression, every nervous breath.

"You should leave Chicago," he whispered as I finished knotting the final suture. "Tomorrow morning. I'll have Kirill wire funds to an offshore account. You can start over anywhere."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you stay in the crosshairs of a war that isn't yours."

I looked at the photograph on the floor, then back at the powerful man bleeding at my feet, who had secretly burned the world to keep me safe without ever asking for credit.

"I'm not going anywhere, Mr. Volkov," I said quietly, wrapping a clean bandage tight around his torso. "If I'm already in the crosshairs, I'd rather stay where I can see the enemy."

A ghost of a smile flickered across his lips before darkness finally claimed his consciousness, his heavy head resting lightly against my shoulder.
