Chapter 8 - Healing the Estate

Silence settled over the grand Cole estate once more, but this time, it was a peaceful, healing silence.

The following week was a whirlwind of activity, but of a vastly different kind. Federal investigators cleared Arthur’s medical regimen, replacing the toxic compounds with proper restorative care under the supervision of a specialized geriatric team brought in directly from Johns Hopkins. Within days, the color began to return to Arthur’s cheeks, his hand tremors subsided significantly, and his sharp, witty intellect started shining through once more.

"I told you my boy Nathan had good instincts," Arthur chuckled warmly, sitting in his favorite leather armchair as Nathan poured him a cup of fresh, pure chamomile tea handed to him by Maria.

"You told me no such thing, Dad, you always said I was stubborn as a mule," Nathan laughed, pulling up a chair beside his father and smiling warmly at Maria, who stood nearby with her cleaning caddy, preparing to excuse herself.

"Maria, please stay," Nathan said gently, standing up and walking over to her.

Maria looked up, a bit surprised. "Mr. Cole, if there's anything else need cleaning—"

"No, Maria. There is nothing else that needs cleaning," Nathan interrupted, a deep, sincere smile touching his eyes. "For six years, you have quietly looked after this family with unwavering loyalty, courage, and grace. You protected my father when no one else would listen, and you single-handedly saved our family from absolute ruin."

Nathan reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thick, official-looking document bound in navy blue leather, placing it gently into her hands.

"What is this, sir?" Maria asked, her fingers tracing the heavy cover.

"It’s a partnership deed," Nathan said softly. "Effective immediately, you are appointed as the Senior Estate Director and Head of Operations for the entire Cole Foundation and residential properties, complete with a fully endowed equity stake, a generous annual salary increase, and a fully funded college trust for your younger siblings in Queens."

Maria’s breath caught in her throat. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her lashes as she stared at the papers. "Mr. Cole... I... I don't know what to say. This is too much..."

"It’s not enough for what you've done for us, Maria," Arthur chimed in, smiling warmly from his chair. "Call him Nathan, child. We’re family now."
