Chapter 4 - The Secret Inside the Pillow

Maria grabbed the decorative bolster pillow from the corner of the bed and felt along its hidden zipper line, tucked neatly beneath a decorative velvet piping. Her fingers caught the small metal tab and pulled.
The zipper slid open with a soft, raspy hiss that sounded deafening in the dead silence of the mansion.
Reaching inside the dense goose-down stuffing, her fingers brushed against something hard and rigid—not fabric, not cotton. She dug deeper, sliding her hand past the plush filling until her fingertips hooked onto a cold, hard leather folio. With a sharp tug, she pulled it out into the beam of her penlight.
It was a custom-bound, heavy-leather diary, accompanied by a thick stack of printed financial documents, legal drafts, and legal power-of-attorney forms.
Maria dropped to her knees on the plush carpet, flipping open the diary. The first page was written in Victoria’s sharp, aggressive handwriting.
Phase One: Infiltrate the Cole estate. Secure Nathan’s trust. Position myself as the dutiful, loving fiancée. Phase Two: Isolate the old man. Administer the specialized cardiac compound to induce steady decline. Ensure the medical staff diagnoses it as natural failure. Phase Three: Execute the pre-signed emergency medical proxy and asset transfer papers during Nathan’s corporate distraction, routing forty percent of the Cole holdings into offshore accounts under my maiden name. Phase Four: Eliminate remaining obstacles (the maid).
Maria’s breath caught in her throat. The final sentence hit her like a physical blow. Victoria wasn't just planning to rob Nathan blind and murder his father; she had already marked Maria as a loose end to be tied up and disposed of before the ink on the transfer papers dried.
Attached to the legal documents was a sinister surprise: a printed background check report on Maria herself, detailing her family, her mother’s address in Queens, and a series of disturbing handwritten notes detailing a staged break-in and robbery at the estate where Maria would be framed as the prime suspect and fleeing thief.
"My God..." Maria whispered, her hands trembling so violently she nearly dropped the folio.
Victoria hadn't just been playing a dangerous game; she had engineered a flawless trap designed to ruin Maria completely, sending her to prison for decades while walking away with billions of dollars and leaving a trail of grieving, broken men behind her.
Maria knew that keeping the documents hidden in the pillow was no longer enough. If Victoria returned unexpectedly or if security conducted a random sweep, she would be finished. But taking the entire folio out of the house tonight was too risky; the perimeter motion sensors were tied directly to Nathan’s private security app.
Instead, Maria pulled out her phone, switched on the continuous flash mode, and methodically photographed every single page of the diary, every legal document, every offshore bank account number, and every vile plan written in Victoria’s own hand.

When the last page was captured, she carefully slid the folio back into the pillow’s hidden compartment, zipped it shut, and restored the room to absolute perfection. Not a single fiber of dust was out of place.
As she slipped back out into the cool night air and locked the door behind her, Maria made a silent, unyielding vow: Victoria Sinclair had underestimated the quiet girl from the service quarters. Tomorrow, the hunter would become the prey.
