Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece of Deception

The next morning dawned bright and clear, belying the dark storm brewing within the walls of the Cole estate. Maria went about her morning duties with an eerie, calm precision. She prepared Arthur’s breakfast, served it with a warm smile, and ensured his morning vitals were checked by the visiting nurse, who noticed nothing out of the ordinary.

At precisely 2:00 PM, Nathan’s black Bentley rolled back up the driveway. The New York board meeting had concluded successfully, and Nathan was in high spirits, albeit tired from the intense travel schedule. Victoria walked by his side, radiant in a cream-colored silk designer dress, flashing her trademark dazzling smile that could charm the stars out of the sky.

"Welcome back, Mr. Cole, Miss Sinclair," Maria greeted them smoothly in the grand foyer, taking their coats with practiced grace.

"Thank you, Maria. It feels good to be back," Nathan smiled, loosening his tie. "How is my father?"

"He had a restful night, sir. He ate a good breakfast this morning," Maria replied steadily, her eyes meeting Victoria’s for a fleeting second.

Victoria’s gaze narrowed ever so slightly, a brief flash of cold suspicion crossing her features before she masked it with a light, airy laugh. "Oh, Maria is always so dependable, aren't you, sweetie? Nathan, darling, I think I’ll go freshen up in my suite. I have a wonderful surprise for you later this evening."

"Take your time, my love," Nathan said, kissing her cheek before heading toward his private study to review some final acquisition contracts.

Upstairs in her suite, Victoria walked over to her writing desk, checked the hidden latch, and then paused, her instincts suddenly screaming at her. Something felt... off. A microscopic shift in the alignment of her desk items. A faint scent of jasmine soap that didn't belong to her housekeeping staff's standard lavender blend.

Her heart skipping a beat, Victoria rushed to the bed, tore off the decorative bolster, and frantically felt along the zipper. She yanked it open and shoved her hand inside.

Empty.

The leather folio containing her life’s work, her master plan, her offshore transfer codes, and her entire criminal blueprint was completely gone.

Victoria let out a sharp, choked gasp, stumbling backward until her legs hit the edge of the mattress. Her face drained of all color, turning a pasty, sickly white. Someone had been in her room. Someone had found her secret.

And out of everyone in that vast, isolated estate, there was only one person sharp enough, observant enough, and brave enough to pull it off.

Maria Torres.
