Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation
With the legal battle concluded, the hard work of physical and emotional healing began.
Maddie’s new rigid cast remained on her leg for four long months. The physical trauma was significant, but the psychological scar—the fear that adults would hurt her or laugh at her pain—required even greater care.
Walter devoted every spare moment to his daughter. He adjusted his work schedule as an architectural designer to work primarily from home, creating a bright, spacious play area on the ground floor of their home so Maddie wouldn't have to navigate stairs.
Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon was dedicated to physical therapy. Dr. Holloway assigned his top pediatric specialist, a compassionate therapist named Sarah, to guide Maddie through her recovery.
"Alright, Captain Maddie," Sarah would say, turning exercise sessions into pirate adventures where every leg lift was a step closer to finding buried treasure. "Let's see if that brave knee can push the giant foam block across the ocean!"
At first, Maddie was hesitant, gripping Walter’s hand tightly and checking the door to see if anyone was going to enter and pull at her leg.
"I'm right here, sweetheart," Walter would whisper, sitting on the mat beside her, holding her hand without fail. "Nobody is coming in. You're completely safe."
Alice, determined to rebuild her bond with her daughter and make amends for her past passivity, attended every weekend session. She respected the boundary set by the custody agreement, arriving punctually, bringing Maddie's favorite art supplies, and focusing entirely on encouraging her daughter rather than defending her relatives.
Slowly, the trust returned. Maddie began to smile during therapy. Her tears were replaced by determined grunts as she worked to rebuild the muscle tissue around her healing knee.

One afternoon, six months after the incident, Dr. Holloway stood in the therapy room watching Maddie walk across a balance beam with only minimal assistance.
"Look at her, Walter," Dr. Holloway remarked, a warm smile gracing his face. "Children are remarkably resilient when they are surrounded by real protection and unconditional love."
