The fallout from the courtroom evidence was swift, decisive, and uncompromising.
Faced with undeniable video evidence and Dr. Holloway’s meticulous medical testimony, Kendra’s defense collapsed completely. To avoid active prison time on criminal charges of child endangerment and battery, she entered a strict plea agreement.
The court sentenced Kendra to two years of felony probation, three hundred hours of mandatory community service at a rehabilitation center for disabled youth, and mandatory anger management therapy. Additionally, the civil court ruled entirely in Walter’s favor, ordering Kendra and her husband to pay $85,000 in damages to cover all of Maddie’s medical care, specialized physical therapy, and psychological counseling.
To pay the judgment, Kendra was forced to liquidate her personal savings and sell her luxury SUV—a humbling blow to a woman whose pride had always been her defining trait.
The social consequences within the community were equally severe. When the video footage and court results circulated through Somerset Hollow, the relatives who had giggled at the party found themselves shunned by local social circles and local businesses. The laughter that had filled the lodge that afternoon had cost them their standing, their pride, and their peace of mind.
For Walter, however, the financial restitution was secondary. The court awarded him full primary physical custody of Maddie, ensuring that any future contact between Maddie and her maternal extended family would be strictly regulated, monitored, and conditioned upon the child's absolute safety and consent.
As they walked out of the courthouse on the final day of proceedings, Walter turned to Alice, who was standing alone on the stone steps, separated from her family both physically and emotionally.

Alice looked at him, her eyes clear for the first time in years. "I lost my family's approval, Walter... but for the first time, I feel like I'm actually being a real mother to my daughter. Thank you for fighting for her when I was too weak to stand."
