Chapter 5 - The Truth on Tape
The civil proceedings and custody modification hearings moved to the county courthouse three months later. Kendra’s legal defense hinged entirely on the claim that the event was a "tragic accident" born of genuine concern, claiming she had merely tried to adjust the brace and that Maddie had tripped over her own feet.
Her lawyer argued aggressively: "My client is a loving aunt who was simply checking on her niece. The child's father is exaggerating a minor household stumble into a malicious attack to gain total custody."
The courtroom was quiet as the judge listened attentively. Then, Arthur stood up.
"Your Honor, we would like to submit Exhibit C into evidence," Arthur announced. "The community lodge where the birthday party took place recently upgraded its security system. While there were no cameras in the main dining hall, a high-definition corridor camera clearly captured the Reflection in the large wall mirror hanging directly opposite the birthday cake table."
Kendra visibly froze in her seat.
Arthur pressed play on a video monitor facing the bench and the gallery.
The recording was crystal clear. It showed Maddie standing quietly by her grandfather. It showed Kendra approaching with a smirk, reaching down forcefully, grabbing the brace despite the child's obvious resistance, and ripping it off with a violence that made the entire frame shake. It captured the exact moment Maddie’s leg gave out, her agonizing fall to the hardwood floor, and Kendra standing over her, holding the brace like a trophy while laughing.
The silence in the courtroom was absolute.

Alice covered her mouth, sobbing silently as she watched the sheer cruelty displayed on screen. The judge’s expression hardened into steel as he watched the footage play twice.
"Ms. Vance," the judge said, his voice dangerously low as he turned toward Kendra and her council. "I suggest you and your attorney reconsider your strategy before this court hands down its rulings."
