Chapter 4 - The Gathering of Storms

Two weeks later, an informal "family council" was summoned at Alice’s parents' home. The atmosphere in the living room was suffocatingly tense. Kendra sat on the sofa, her arms crossed, flanked by her husband and two cousins who had been present at the birthday party. Alice sat in a chair near the window, looking detached.
"We need a unified story," Kendra’s husband, Mark, insisted, pacing the rug. "If the state prosecutor decides to file formal assault charges, Kendra could face probation or worse. We just tell the investigators that Maddie slipped, Kendra caught her, and the brace came loose by accident."
"A lie?" Alice asked, raising her head. "You want us all to lie under oath to the police?"
"It’s protecting the family, Alice!" her mother interjected sharply. "Walter is using this to ruin us! He’s always hated us, and now he’s using a little bump on Maddie's knee to strip your custody rights and destroy your sister's reputation!"
Alice looked around the room—at her mother, her brother-in-law, and Kendra, who was glaring at her with demanding, unrepentant eyes. For two years, Alice had normalized their subtle cruelties, their snide remarks about Walter, and their dismissive attitude toward Maddie's health condition just to "keep the peace."
Suddenly, the door opened. Walter walked into the room, accompanied by Arthur, his attorney.
Kendra jumped up. "What are you doing here? This is a private family matter!"
"It stopped being a private matter the second you laid hands on my child," Walter said, his presence commanding absolute silence in the room.
Arthur pulled a legal summons from his briefcase and laid it on the coffee table. "Ms. Kendra Vance, you are officially served with a civil action for gross negligence and assault resulting in bodily harm. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order has been issued forbidding you from coming within five hundred feet of Madeline Cole."
Kendra gasped, her face draining of all color. "Alice! Are you going to let him do this to your sister?!"
May you like
Alice slowly stood up. She looked at Kendra, then at her mother, and finally at Walter. The haze of embarrassment and compliance that had blinded her for years finally cleared.
"He isn't doing this to you, Kendra," Alice said softly, her voice carrying a cold weight that shocked everyone present. "You did this to yourself. And I am not going to protect you anymore."
