Chapter 10 - Walking Into the Light
As the sun began to dip below the rolling Tennessee hills, casting a warm golden glow across the yard, the guests began to say their goodbyes.
Alice walked up to Walter before heading to her car. "She had a wonderful day, Walter. Thank you for hosting this."
"She loved having you here, Alice," Walter said genuinely. "You've done great work this year. Maddie sees it."
Alice smiled through a quick mist of tears. "We finally got it right for her." She leaned down, gave Maddie a long hug, and promised to see her for their weekend park visit before walking down the driveway.
When the yard was quiet again, Walter sat on the porch steps. The evening air was soft, filled with the gentle chirping of crickets.
Maddie walked over and sat down beside him, leaning her head against his arm. She looked out over the lawn where she had been running freely all afternoon.
"Dad?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, Maddie?"
"My leg doesn't hurt anymore. Not even a little bit."
Walter wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "I know, sweetheart. You're completely healed."
Maddie looked up at him with her large, clear eyes. "And nobody is ever going to take my brace off or laugh at me again, right?"
Walter looked into his daughter's eyes, his voice firm, unwavering, and filled with a solemn promise that would last a lifetime.

"Never again, Maddie. I promise you. As long as I am alive, you will always be safe, you will always be heard, and you will always be loved."
Maddie smiled, resting her head back against his chest. Together, father and daughter sat in the calm quiet of the evening, watching the fireflies light up the night, completely whole, completely safe, and finally at peace.
