Chapter 8 - Healing the Wounds

The transition back to light and life was not instantaneous, but every passing day brought a new shade of color back into their world.
The first week was dedicated to rebuilding what had been broken. Alejandro relocated his primary office to the estate’s private library so he could work while remaining close to Lucía and Sofía. He hired top-tier medical specialists and nutritionists to help Lucía and Sofía regain their health, ensuring that every trace of the deprivation they had suffered in the damp tenement near La Merced was erased.
Sofía’s transformation was the most joyful to witness. The little girl who had once nervously hid pieces of bread in her jacket pocket now ran freely through the estate’s sun-drenched gardens, her laughter echoing past the white orchids and marble fountains. She no longer flinched at sudden movements or checked the pantry closets out of fear that food would vanish overnight. Her bedroom was completely redecorated—a bright, whimsical sanctuary filled with stuffed animals, fairy lights, and towering shelves of books.
Lucía’s healing took longer, anchored in quiet mornings spent with Alejandro over steaming cups of coffee in the garden, talking through the years of silence, the forged letters, and the loneliness that had almost broken her spirit.
“You carry too much guilt, Alejandro,” Lucía said one afternoon as they sat beneath the shade of an old oak tree, watching Sofía chase a butterfly across the lawn. “You didn't know what your mother was doing.”
“I should have suspected,” Alejandro replied, his voice heavy with self-reproach. “I was too blind, too consumed by building the business, too trusting of a woman who wore a mask of perfection.”
Lucía reached out, placing her warm palm over his clenched fist. “We survived it, Alejandro. And because of it, we know what truly matters. It wasn't the empire, the banquets, or the social standing. It was us.”

True to his word, Alejandro had completely restructured the Robles Construction Corporation. He removed every executive who had blindly followed Doña Teresa’s toxic culture of elitism, replacing them with ethical leaders who shared his vision of community-driven development. He also established the Sofía & Lucía Foundation, a major philanthropic initiative dedicated to providing safe housing, food security, and legal protection for impoverished single mothers and children across Mexico City.
Don Eusebio, who had risked everything to reveal the truth, was honored as the head of corporate logistics and security logistics, given a generous pension plan, and a permanent home on the estate grounds where he could spend his retirement years in comfort and dignity.
