Chapter 5 - The Midnight Audit

By 3:00 AM, the lights in the executive suite of the Robles Construction headquarters on Paseo de la Reforma were blazing like a beacon against the dark Mexico City skyline.
Alejandro sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his sleeves rolled up, his tie discarded on the floor. Opposite him sat Mateo Torres, the chief financial officer of the corporation and Alejandro’s most trusted friend since university. Mateo looked exhausted, having been dragged out of bed in the middle of the night by an urgent encrypted text from his boss.
On the leather sofa across the office, Lucía sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket that Alejandro had retrieved from his private car stash, sipping hot tea while Sofía slept peacefully with her head resting in her lap.
“Read it to me again, Mateo,” Alejandro said, his voice dangerously calm. His eyes were fixed on a thick stack of financial printouts spread out before him.
Mateo adjusted his glasses, scanning the digital ledger on his tablet, his expression turning grimmer by the second.
“It’s all here, Alejandro,” Mateo said quietly. “Every month for the past thirty-six months, a transfer of 100,000 pesos left your personal investment account designated for the ‘Robles Family Trust – Child Welfare Fund.’ But it never went to an open account in Lucía’s name.”
Alejandro’s gaze hardened. “Where did it go?”
“It was routed through a secondary holding account managed directly by the corporate accounting department under Doña Teresa’s personal executive authorization,” Mateo replied, tapping the screen. “From there, it was split. Fifty thousand went into a private portfolio under your mother’s name in the Cayman Islands. The other fifty thousand was funneled into real estate acquisitions in the Santa Fe district—properties purchased through shell companies owned entirely by your mother.”
Lucía looked up from the sofa, her eyes wide with disbelief. “She stole the money meant for Sofía’s food and medical care just to buy more property?”
“Not just property,” Mateo added, glancing nervously at Alejandro. “She used those exact funds as leverage to secure loans for the company's new luxury resort development. If those accounts are frozen right now, your mother’s entire collateral structure collapses by morning.”
Alejandro stood up slowly. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the sprawling city lights below. The anger that had consumed him hours earlier had now crystallized into something cold, precise, and absolute.
“She built her entire kingdom on lies, theft, and the suffering of a little child,” Alejandro said softly, turning back to face his CFO. “Mateo, I want every single account frozen before the stock market opens at 9:00 AM. I want a complete forensic audit of every transaction authorized by Doña Teresa over the past decade. And call our corporate legal team. Tell them to prepare an emergency injunction for fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment.”

Mateo swallowed hard, recognizing the absolute resolve in his friend’s voice. “Alejandro… that’s your mother. If we file these injunctions publicly, the board will implode, and the press will tear the family name apart.”
“Let them tear it apart,” Alejandro replied without a second hesitation. “The name Robles was built by my grandfather through honest sweat, not by throwing a four-year-old child into a trash heap. If my mother wants a war, I will give her a front-row seat to her own destruction.”
