Chapter 8 - The Adoption Day

Six months later, on a bright, crisp autumn morning, we stood inside the family court once again—this time, under entirely joyful circumstances.
Maya wore a beautiful ivory lace dress that matched Lily’s, her dark hair neatly braided with pink ribbons. Friends, family, and even Mrs. Henderson filled the gallery behind us, holding colorful balloons and flowers.
The adoption judge smiled warmly down at Maya. "Maya, today you get to choose your full name for your new birth certificate. Would you like to keep your name?"
Maya stepped forward toward the microphone, holding Lily’s hand on her right and my hand on her left. She looked up at Michael and me with eyes filled with pride and certainty.
"My name is Maya Lily Collins," she announced clearly, her voice echoing through the room.
The judge smiled broadly. "Then by the authority vested in me by the State of California, I officially declare you, Maya Lily Collins, the legal daughter of Michael and Sarah Collins, and the forever sister of Lily Collins!"

The courtroom erupted into applause and cheers. Lily pulled Maya into a huge hug, spinning her around in circles. "We're real sisters now! For real!" Lily squealed with joy.
Michael scooped both girls into his arms, lifting them off the ground as we all laughed through our tears. The darkness that had once haunted Maya’s early life was officially banished, replaced by an unbreakable promise of family, identity, and unconditional belonging.
