Chapter 3 - The Secret Sanctuary

I immediately woke Michael. Seeing a surgeon accustomed to life-or-death emergencies freeze in utter shock was something I had never witnessed before. He stared at the small girl sitting quietly on the living room sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sipping a warm glass of milk I had prepared for her.

Lily sat right next to her, offering her favorite plush rabbit. To my surprise, Lily wasn't frightened at all. Instead, a deep, innate empathy seemed to shine through my daughter’s eyes.

"She was cold, Mom," Lily said softly, looking at me. "I knew someone was there... but when I woke up two nights ago and saw her crying, she told me she didn't have anywhere else to go. I gave her part of my blanket."

My heart broke into a thousand pieces. All those mornings Lily complained her bed felt "too small"—she wasn't complaining out of annoyance; she was struggling to share her space quietly so this unknown child wouldn't be chased back out into the cold night.

Michael knelt down in front of the little girl, maintaining a gentle distance. "What's your name, little one?"

The girl looked into her cup of milk, her small shoulders slumping. "Maya," she whispered. "My name is Maya."

"Where do you live, Maya?" Michael asked softly.

Maya hesitated, clutching the warm glass with both hands. "Nowhere right now. I used to live with... with my uncle, three streets over. But he... he gets very angry when he drinks. He locked me in the garage without food for two days. I managed to squeeze through the small back hatch..."

She wiped a tear with her dirty sleeve. "I hid in your backyard garden shed last week. Then I noticed the small laundry chute hatch near your back patio wall... it wasn't locked. I crawled inside because it was freezing outside."

Michael and I exchanged a stunned, horrified look. Our house was an old Spanish villa built in the 1920s, complete with an old, deactivated laundry ventilation shaft that led straight up into the crawlspace behind Lily's bedroom closet. Maya had found that tiny space, lining it with old rags, and crawling into Lily's room at night simply to feel human warmth.

"I didn't steal anything," Maya sobbed, her body shaking again. "I just wanted to lie somewhere warm... somewhere safe. I'm sorry... please don't send me back to my uncle."
