Chapter 2 - The Midnight Discovery

My hand trembled violently, almost causing the phone to slip from my fingers onto the hard hardwood floor. On the illuminated glass screen, bathed in the eerie infrared glow of the camera feed, the reality of what was happening inside my daughter’s bedroom unfolded.

Lily was fast asleep, pressed against the extreme right edge of her spacious two-meter mattress, her small body curled tightly into a protective ball. But she was not alone.

Lying beside her, huddled under the edge of the heavy goose-down duvet, was another figure.

It was a small child. A little girl, roughly Lily’s age, with long, tangled dark hair and thin, fragile shoulders clad in an oversized, dirty hooded sweatshirt. She lay on her side, motionless, facing Lily with her eyes closed, breathing softly in sync with my daughter.

I stood paralyzed in the middle of our dimly lit hallway, my pulse hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. My mind raced through endless terrifying possibilities. Who was this child? How did she get into our house? How long had she been coming here? The security alarms were armed every evening; the smart locks on every exterior door remained bolted from the inside. Yet here was a stranger, sleeping peacefully in my eight-year-old’s bed.

I took a sharp, quiet breath and began creeping toward Lily’s door. Every floorboard beneath my bare feet felt like a landmine. I reached the wooden door, gripped the cold brass handle, and slowly pushed it inward.

The soft hinges yielded without a sound. The warm, yellow glow of the nightlight cast soft shadows across the room. As the door swung open, the small figure on the bed stirred instantly. High-alert instincts born of survival seemed to govern her every move. Before I could even step into the room, the girl sat up, her dark eyes wide with sudden terror.

She was remarkably frail. Her cheeks were hollow, smudged with dirt and grease, and her small hands clutched the edge of the blanket as if preparing to fight or flee.

"Don't... please don't hurt me," she whispered, her voice barely audible, cracking with sheer panic.

She scrambled backward toward the wall, her eyes darting frantically toward the bedroom window, then to the closet, looking for an escape route.

Lily stirred, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "Mom? What's going on?"

"Lily, sweetie, stay right there," I said softly, keeping my tone as calm and soothing as humanly possible despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. I raised my hands slowly, showing her my open palms. "I'm not going to hurt you, sweetheart. You're safe here. I promise."

The strange little girl pressed her back firmly against the headboard, her chest heaving as tears silently welled up in her dark, bruised-looking eyes. She looked less like a threat and more like a lost, terrified creature who had wandered in from the bitter cold.

"Where are your parents?" I asked gently, taking one slow step closer. "How did you get in here?"

She didn't answer. She only buried her face in her knees, trembling so hard that the bedframe vibrated beneath her.
